THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME

Chapter Two The silence inside the ballroom was almost deafening. Bella's pulse pounded in her ears. The shattered wineglass lay at her feet, crimson liquid spreading slowly across the polished marble floor before soaking into the expensive silver-grey suit of the man standing before her. Michael Vale. The name alone carried enough influence to silence an entire room. She had seen him countless times on magazine covers, business journals, and television interviews. But standing before him... He was nothing like the photographs. The cameras had captured his face. They had failed to capture his presence. He was taller than she had imagined, his broad shoulders filling the perfectly tailored suit as though it had been made solely for him. His sharp jawline was dusted with the faintest shadow of a beard, while a lock of dark hair rested carelessly against his forehead. His eyes... Bella's breath caught. They were the kind of eyes that revealed nothing, yet somehow made her feel as though they saw everything. She realized, with growing horror, that she had been staring. Oh, God... stop staring. Heat rushed to her cheeks as she quickly lowered her gaze. "I'm... I'm so sorry." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I wasn't looking where I was going." Around them, whispers began to spread. "She spilled wine on Michael Vale..." "Who is she?" "She's finished." Someone quietly laughed. Another guest shook his head in pity. Bella wished the marble floor would open and swallow her whole. Without thinking, she bent to gather the broken pieces of glass. A deep voice stopped her. "Don't." She froze. Looking up slowly, she found Michael watching her. "You'll cut yourself." For a brief second, neither of them moved. Then, despite his own warning, Michael crouched to help. Bella reached for one of the larger pieces at the exact same moment he did. Their fingers brushed. Just once. Just lightly. Yet Bella felt the warmth of his skin shoot through her fingertips before settling somewhere dangerously close to her heart. She withdrew her hand almost immediately. "So-sorry," she murmured again. Michael noticed. The tiny reaction. The quick inhale. The way she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear to hide her embarrassment. Interesting. Most women tried desperately to gain his attention. This one looked as though she wanted nothing more than to disappear. "You've apologized three times already," he said quietly. Bella blinked. "I have?" "The first was enough." There was no anger in his voice. No irritation. Only calm. It surprised her. She had expected him to be furious. She looked down at the dark stain spreading across his jacket. "I've ruined your suit." Michael glanced at it briefly. "It'll survive." Bella looked up again. "You don't sound convinced." The corner of his mouth lifted ever so slightly. "It wasn't my favorite." For a moment... Bella wasn't sure if he'd just made a joke. Before she could respond, a woman hurried toward them in elegant silver heels. "Sir." She handed Michael a clean white handkerchief. He accepted it with a nod before offering it to Bella instead. She looked between him and the handkerchief. "For me?" "You seem more distressed than I am." Bella hesitated. Their fingers brushed again as she accepted it. Why did something so small feel so... significant? She quickly dabbed at the stain she'd accidentally splashed onto his wristwatch. "I'm making it worse." "You are," Michael admitted. Bella stopped. Then she looked up, horrified. His expression remained perfectly serious. Until... A quiet chuckle escaped him. It was subtle. Almost impossible to hear. But it was there. Bella stared. "Did you just laugh?" "I might have." "You definitely did." "I'll deny it." To Bella's surprise... She laughed. Not politely. Not because she felt she had to. A genuine laugh escaped her lips, bright enough to erase the tension that had surrounded them only moments before. Michael found himself watching her. It wasn't just that she was beautiful. It was the way her entire face transformed when she smiled. It was... refreshing. He realized he was staring. He almost never stared. Bella noticed. Their eyes met. For one long heartbeat... The bustling ballroom disappeared. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them looked away. There was something strangely unsettling about the silence between them. Not uncomfortable. Just... Unexpected. Bella was the first to break eye contact. She cleared her throat. "I should probably let you get changed before I destroy the rest of your wardrobe." Michael's lips curved into the faintest smile. "I think that's a wise decision." Before either of them could say another word, a graceful voice interrupted. "Michael." Bella turned. A striking woman approached with effortless elegance. Her champagne-colored gown shimmered beneath the crystal chandeliers, diamonds glittering at her neck. She stopped beside Michael and glanced briefly at Bella before returning her attention to him. "There you are. Your father has been looking for you." Michael nodded. "I'll be there shortly." The woman's gaze returned to Bella once more. This time, it lingered. Just long enough to make Bella feel examined. Then she smiled. It was perfectly polite. Perfectly beautiful. And somehow... Perfectly cold. Bella couldn't explain why. But for the first time that evening... She had the unsettling feeling that spilling wine on Michael Vale wasn't the biggest complication waiting for her tonight.
