THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Chapter 8 The drive back to Hart Creative was quieter than Bella expected. The project folder rested on her lap, unopened. She wasn't thinking about the proposal. She was thinking about Michael Vale. Not because of his looks—although she couldn't deny that he was an exceptionally handsome man. It was the way he carried himself. Measured. Reserved. Every word he spoke seemed carefully chosen, as though he disliked wasting even a sentence. She shook her head lightly. "Stop thinking about him." "He's a client... or at least, he might become one." The moment Bella stepped into the office, Clara looked up from her computer. "You're back." Liam swiveled his chair around. "How did it go?" Bella smiled as she placed the folder on the conference table. "It went... better than I expected." Clara folded her arms. "That's all?" Bella laughed. "I had lunch." Clara's eyebrows shot up. "Lunch?" "With Michael Vale." Liam nearly dropped the pen in his hand. "The Michael Vale?" Bella sighed. "Can everyone stop saying it like that?" Clara pulled out a chair. "No. Sit down." "We're hearing everything." Bella shook her head, smiling despite herself. "There isn't much to tell." "He reviewed our portfolio." "He wants us to prepare a branding proposal for one of Vale Corporation's community development projects." Liam's eyes widened. "Wait..." "A real project?" Bella nodded. "He hasn't awarded us the contract." "It's more like... a test." Liam stared at the folder as though it contained gold. "This could change everything." Bella looked at it too. "It could." Clara leaned forward. "What did your instincts tell you?" Bella thought carefully before answering. "He's demanding." "He expects excellence." "But..." She hesitated. "But what?" Clara asked. Bella smiled faintly. "I don't think he's the arrogant man everyone believes he is." Neither Clara nor Liam interrupted. "He listens before he speaks," Bella continued. "And when he compliments someone..." "It's because he means it." Clara smiled knowingly. "So he complimented your work." Bella nodded. "Our work." She corrected herself immediately. "This project belongs to all of us." Liam grinned. "That's our boss." Bella looked at both of them. "We have ten days." "No shortcuts." "No rushed ideas." "If we're doing this..." "We're giving them the best presentation Hart Creative has ever produced." Clara stood and extended her hand. "I'm in." Liam placed his hand over hers. "So am I." Bella laughed before placing hers on top. "Then let's make it unforgettable." Three days passed quickly. The office became their second home. Coffee cups multiplied. Sticky notes covered the walls. Design concepts were pinned, removed, revised, and pinned up again. Bella refused to settle for "good enough." Late Thursday afternoon, she stood before a whiteboard filled with ideas. Liam adjusted another slide. "I still think Version Three communicates the community message better." Bella studied it carefully. "I agree." "But the colours feel too corporate." Clara crossed the room carrying several printed samples. "What if we soften the palette?" Bella compared the designs. A slow smile appeared. "That's it." Clara noticed immediately. "You like it." "I do." "It feels human." Liam nodded. "Like people instead of buildings." Bella smiled. "Exactly." Meanwhile... On the top floor of Vale Corporation... Michael closed another meeting. Daniel followed him into his office. "The quarterly reports are ready." Michael accepted them. "Anything else?" Daniel hesitated. "There is." Michael looked up. "Hart Creative requested access to the project's community research files." Michael's expression remained calm. "They're doing their homework." "Yes, sir." "They also submitted a list of questions." Daniel handed over a neatly organised document. Michael scanned it briefly. His eyebrows lifted almost imperceptibly. "They're asking the right questions." Daniel smiled. "I thought you'd say that." Most agencies had focused on colours, slogans and publicity. Bella's team wanted to understand the people the project would serve before creating the campaign. It was... refreshing. Michael closed the file. "Approve their request." "I'll notify them." Daniel nodded before leaving. Left alone, Michael looked toward the city skyline. Almost unconsciously... He found himself wondering what Bella was doing at that moment. He frowned slightly. Then returned to work. Friday morning... Bella arrived earlier than everyone else. She unlocked the office and switched on the lights. The silence felt peaceful. She opened her notebook and began reviewing yesterday's revisions. A soft knock interrupted her concentration. She frowned. It wasn't even eight o'clock. Who could that be? She walked to the door and opened it. A delivery driver stood outside holding a long white box tied with a navy ribbon. "Delivery for Miss Isabella Hart." Bella looked puzzled. "I think there's been a mistake." The driver checked the label. "No, ma'am." "It's addressed to you." Bella accepted the package carefully. "Who sent it?" The driver smiled apologetically. "I'm afraid I don't know." He left before she could ask another question. Bella placed the box on her desk. Clara arrived moments later. Her eyes immediately landed on it. "What's that?" Bella shook her head. "I honestly have no idea." Together... They untied the ribbon. Inside lay a beautifully bound hardcover book. The Psychology of Successful Brands. There was no jewellery. No flowers. No expensive gift. Only a single handwritten note. Preparation creates confidence. — M.V. Bella stared at the initials for several seconds. A slow smile touched her lips. Not because it was romantic. Because... He had understood exactly what would encourage her. And somehow... That meant more than an extravagant gift ever could.
