BUILDING TRUST

Chapter 10 Monday arrived with the familiar rhythm of deadlines. By eight o'clock, Hart Creative Solutions was already alive with activity. Bella walked into the office carrying two takeaway coffee cups and a paper bag of pastries. "Good morning." Liam looked up from his laptop in surprise. "You bought breakfast?" Bella smiled. "I noticed neither of you remembered to eat on Saturday." Clara laughed as she accepted a coffee. "Our boss is paying attention." "I always pay attention," Bella replied, hanging her handbag on the back of her chair. "I just don't always say it." Liam grinned. "I'll pretend this isn't your way of apologizing for making us work all weekend." Bella laughed softly. "I'm not apologizing." "You both volunteered." "We did," Clara admitted. "But free food is still appreciated." The three of them shared breakfast around the conference table while reviewing the latest research. The atmosphere was relaxed, filled with the easy conversation of people who genuinely enjoyed working together. An hour later, Bella stood before the whiteboard. "We have seven days left." She looked from Liam to Clara. "Today, I don't want designs." "I want stories." Clara tilted her head. "Stories?" Bella nodded. "We've been focusing on what Vale Corporation wants people to see." She tapped the community research file. "I want to know what the people actually feel." Liam understood immediately. "So instead of creating a campaign..." "We build one around real lives," Bella finished. Clara smiled. "I like that." Bella uncapped a marker. "Let's ask one question." She wrote it across the top of the board. What does 'home' mean to them? The room fell quiet. Sometimes... The simplest question was the most powerful. At eleven o'clock, Bella's phone rang. The caller ID read: Daniel Brooks "Good morning, Miss Hart." "Good morning, Daniel." "I hope I'm not interrupting." "Not at all." "Mr. Vale has reviewed your preliminary concept." Bella straightened unconsciously. "And?" "He would like to meet your team this afternoon." Bella blinked. "My team?" "Yes." "He believes everyone contributing to the project should be part of the discussion." A small smile spread across Bella's face. "I appreciate that." "The meeting is scheduled for two o'clock." "We'll be there." By half past one, Bella, Clara and Liam arrived at Vale Corporation. Daniel welcomed them warmly. "It's good to see you again." "You too," Bella replied. He led them into a spacious conference room instead of Michael's private office. Large presentation screens lined one wall. Folders had already been arranged neatly at each seat. "This feels serious," Clara whispered. Liam nodded. "I think that's the point." Moments later, Michael entered. Everyone stood instinctively. "Good afternoon." His calm voice filled the room. "Please... sit." Bella noticed something. He greeted Liam first. Then Clara. Then her. Not because she mattered more. Because he respected everyone in the room equally. It was a small gesture. But Bella appreciated it. Michael opened the meeting without wasting time. "I've reviewed your initial direction." He looked toward the presentation board. "'People Before Promotion.'" He paused. "I like it." Clara smiled proudly. Liam quietly relaxed in his chair. Bella simply nodded. "Thank you." Michael continued. "But tell me why." Bella stood. Instead of reading from her notes, she spoke naturally. "Because communities don't trust advertisements." "They trust people." "If this campaign only tells them what Vale Corporation has built..." "They'll forget it." She changed the slide. "But if we show them the families whose lives changed..." "They'll remember." The room became quiet. Michael watched her carefully. Not interrupting. Not correcting. Simply listening. When she finished, he folded his hands together. "You believe emotion is stronger than promotion." Bella nodded. "I do." Michael looked toward Liam. "What do you think?" Liam answered confidently. "I think people remember how something made them feel." Michael turned to Clara. "And you?" "Our job isn't to impress people." "It's to earn their trust." For the first time that afternoon... Michael smiled. It was subtle. Brief. But unmistakable. "I couldn't agree more." Bella caught herself staring. The smile transformed his face. It softened the sharp lines that usually made him seem untouchable. For one careless second... She forgot she was in a meeting. Michael looked at her. Their eyes met. Bella quickly lowered hers to the presentation remote, silently hoping no one had noticed. Across the table, Daniel hid a faint smile behind his notebook. The meeting stretched into late afternoon. Ideas were questioned. Suggestions were challenged. Concepts evolved. No one was defensive. It felt less like a client meeting... And more like four professionals building something together. As everyone packed up, Michael gathered the presentation folders. "This is the strongest proposal I've reviewed this year." Bella looked genuinely surprised. "We're still refining it." "I know." "Which is why I said proposal." He handed the folder back to her. "Keep refining." "I think you're closer than you realize." Those simple words filled Bella with a quiet confidence she hadn't felt in a long time. Outside the building, Clara nudged Bella with her elbow as they waited for the lift. "You were staring." Bella almost choked. "I was not." "You absolutely were," Liam laughed. Bella sighed dramatically. "I was thinking." "About his smile?" Clara asked innocently. Bella looked away, trying—and failing—to hide the warmth creeping into her cheeks. "It was a meeting." "That's all." Clara exchanged a mischievous glance with Liam. Neither of them said another word. They didn't need to. Bella's silence had answered for her. From the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, Michael watched their car pull away. Daniel walked in quietly. "They make a good team." Michael nodded. "They do." After a brief pause, Daniel asked carefully, "And Miss Hart?" Michael's eyes remained on the street below. "She's determined." Daniel smiled. "I wasn't asking about work." For the first time in years... Michael had no immediate answer.
