“She lost the baby?” he asked, his eyes wide with shock and sadness.
“Yes,” Scarlet replied, momentarily dropping her gaze. Tears were beginning to well up in the corners of his eyes, and she knew, despite the invincibility he displayed yesterday, all of this information had to be overwhelming. “Did you know about the baby, then?” she asked, touching him lightly on the sleeve. He nodded. “And you knew he was yours?”
