“Eventually, the clouds lifted. I found some drift wood that had broken free from the boat and climbed aboard a makeshift raft. I was there for days, Ginny, floating out in the open ocean beneath a blazing sun. No water. No food. I thought for certain I would die. But then, I saw another island, and while this one was also protected by a reef, it wasn’t nearly as lethal as the first. I managed to make my way onto the island, thanking God that I had made it thus far.” He paused for a moment to look into her eyes. She was clearly hanging on his every word. He realized he needed to be vague about the timeline or else he would confuse her, and that was the last thing he wanted to do. He had spent ninety-seven days on that island, marking each one off on a palm tree with a knife he had managed
