Elizabeth and William Halifax’s home was quite crowded, and Lydia was finding it difficult to navigate through the foyer on her way to the ballroom. There, one would find more room, potentially, even though she’d be inclined to sit on one side of the room and only move if invited to dance by a gentleman or asked if she’d like to accompany some young fellow to the refreshment table. The rules of such soirees were well defined and entirely ridiculous in Lydia’s opinion, and she thought perhaps that was why so many women were reluctant to enter the larger space, still standing about in the foyer and hallways.
