I’ve just gotten dressed in my running gear when Ubert knocks on the door. I know it’s him because he has a really distinctive, heavy sort of knock. Drum-drum. Like a giant has come calling. “Are you decent?” he asks. He opens the door. As always, the big man stands respectfully, keeping his eyes on my face. He’s never once showed any sign that he’s attracted to me. I’m grateful for that. It’s a small gesture of normal, decent humanity in the middle of what is otherwise a dream completely untethered to reality. “I have something to show you, miss,” he says. Or maybe I was wrong. There’s an odd emphasis on that something. “Okay?” I raise an eyebrow. “Follow me, please,” he says. He turns and trudges down the hallway. Curious, I follow.
