CHAPTER 4: THE CONFRONTATION

1631 Words
The morning started like every other. Seraphina ground lavender for sleep tinctures, the familiar rhythm soothing in its predictability. From the back room came Asher's voice as he played with his beetle, creating elaborate adventures for Rocky. The bell above the clinic door chimed. "I'll be with you in just a moment," she called without looking up, her hands continuing their steady work. "Take your time." The mortar slipped in her hands. That voice. Deep and commanding, with an authority that made her wolf bristle. She knew that voice, had heard it in nightmares for five years. No. It couldn't be. She looked up slowly, her fingers tightening on the mortar until her knuckles went white. Alpha Kieran Blackwood stood in her doorway. He was exactly as she remembered—tall enough to fill the frame, powerfully built, those amber eyes that had once looked through her like she was furniture. But something was different now. The cold indifference she remembered was gone, replaced by something intense and desperate that made her stomach clench. He was looking at her like she mattered. "Seraphina." Her name on his lips sounded wrong. Like a prayer. Like an apology. Like it hurt him to speak it. Her wolf, peaceful for five years, erupted in her chest. Run. Protect the pup. Run now. "You need to leave." Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "Right now." "I can't do that." He took a step forward. She stepped back instinctively, putting the worktable between them like a barrier. Her heart hammered against her ribs. "You have no business here. No right to be here." "I know." Another step. "I know I have no right to ask anything of you. But please, just listen—" "Listen to what? More lies? More excuses?" Five years of suppressed rage bubbled up her throat. "You made your position perfectly clear six years ago, Alpha Blackwood. I was a vessel. A means to an end. A transaction. Well, congratulations. The contract is over. You got what you wanted, and I owe you absolutely nothing." Something flickered across his face. Pain, maybe. "You're right. You don't owe me anything. But Seraphina, I've been searching—" "Mama!" The world stopped. Asher's voice, bright and happy, rang out from the back room. Seraphina's blood turned to ice. No. Not now. Please, not now. But it was too late. Asher burst through the doorway, his silver-blonde hair catching the morning light like a beacon. His small hands cupped carefully around something—Rocky, probably—and his grey eyes sparkled with excitement. "Mama, look! Mr. Matteo said it's a stag beetle and they're really rare and I found it all by myself and—" He stopped mid-sentence, finally registering the tension in the room. His gaze found Kieran, and his expression shifted from joy to wariness. He pressed closer to Seraphina's side, suddenly small. "Who's that?" His voice came out quieter, uncertain. Seraphina wanted to lie. Wanted to say he was just a patient, a visitor, no one important. But the words stuck in her throat because Kieran was staring at Asher like he'd been struck by lightning. The Alpha's face had gone white. His amber eyes were wide, fixed on the child with an intensity that made Seraphina's protective instincts flare. She watched as he catalogued every feature—the silver hair, the grey eyes, the small pointed chin, the shape of his face. "How old is he?" Kieran's voice came out hoarse, broken. "None of your business." Seraphina moved between them, a wall of protection. "Asher, go to the back room. Now." "But Mama—" "Now, sweetheart. Please." Something in her voice must have convinced him. Asher looked between her and Kieran once more, his little brow furrowed with confusion, then obeyed. But not before casting one more look at the stranger who was making his mother's hands shake. The moment he disappeared through the doorway, Seraphina turned on Kieran. "You have ten seconds to leave before I call for pack security." "He's mine." Not a question. A statement of absolute certainty. "That boy is my son." "You have no son." The lie tasted like poison. "You're mistaken. You need to leave. Now." "Don't." Kieran's voice cracked. "Don't lie to me. Not about this. Seraphina, please, I had a DNA screening done. The regional children's health program six months ago. The genetic markers—" The health screening. That routine checkup Matteo had insisted on. One simple test, and her entire carefully constructed life was crumbling. "I don't care about your test—" "Blackwood Alpha bloodline. Ninety-four percent probability match." Kieran pulled papers from his jacket with shaking hands. "He's mine. You ran away pregnant with my child." "I ran away from you!" The words exploded out of her. "I ran because I heard your precious Luna planning my death. Because I was nothing to you but a womb to use and discard. Because staying meant dying, and I chose to live. So yes, I ran. And I'd do it again." The clinic door slammed open with enough force to rattle the windows. Matteo Silvermoon filled the doorway, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. His ice-blue eyes blazed with fury, his massive frame radiating Alpha power that made the air shimmer. Two of his warriors flanked him, hands on weapons. "Is there a problem here, Sera?" His voice was deceptively calm, but Seraphina knew him well enough to hear the barely leashed violence beneath it. "Alpha Blackwood was just leaving," she managed. "I'm not going anywhere." Kieran's own Alpha aura flared, meeting Matteo's. The two powers crashed together like storm fronts, making the herbs on the walls tremble. "Not until she tells me the truth about that boy." "The truth?" Matteo stepped fully into the clinic, and suddenly the space felt too small for two Alphas. "The truth is you're in my territory without permission or invitation, harassing a woman under my protection. That's grounds for war, Blackwood." "That woman stole my heir." Kieran's voice dropped to something dangerous and cold. "My son." "Papa Matteo?" Asher's small voice cut through the tension like a knife. He'd peeked through the doorway again, his grey eyes enormous, his lower lip trembling. He looked between the three adults, trying to understand why everyone was angry. Kieran's attention snapped to Asher, then to Matteo. "Papa?" The single word dripped with devastation and rage. "You let him call you Papa? You're raising my son and letting him think you're his father?" "I've been his father for five years," Matteo said, each word precise and cutting. "Where the hell were you?" "I didn't know he existed!" Kieran's control was fracturing. "She ran. She took him and disappeared and I didn't know—" "You didn't know because you didn't care!" Seraphina's voice cracked, years of suppressed pain finally breaking free. "You used me like I was nothing. Like I wasn't even human. I was supposed to carry your child and then what? Die quietly so your Luna could play mother? Stick around to watch you treat my baby the way you treated me?" "I was wrong." Kieran's eyes were too bright, his hands clenched into fists. "God, Seraphina, I was wrong about everything. But I'm here now. I'm here and I'm not leaving without my son." "You have no legal claim to him." Matteo's voice could have frozen fire. "Asher is registered under my pack. His mother is under my protection. You have nothing." "I have this." Kieran thrust the papers forward—DNA results, legal documents, custody petitions. "Proof he carries Blackwood Alpha bloodline. Under pack law, an Alpha's heir belongs with his father. I have every legal right to take him." "Legal right?" Seraphina's laugh was brittle. "You think genetics give you rights? You think DNA makes you a father?" "I think that boy is my blood. My heir. My son." Kieran's gaze locked with hers, and she saw determination there that terrified her. "And whether you like it or not, Seraphina, I'm going to be in his life. I'm not leaving without him." "Like hell you're not." Matteo moved between them, a wall of protective fury. "You're not taking that child anywhere. Not now, not ever." "I will tear this entire territory apart if I have to." Kieran's Alpha command filled the room, making Matteo's warriors instinctively bare their throats in submission before they could fight it off. "That's my son. Mine. And no one—not you, not this pack, not even her—is going to keep me from him." Seraphina looked at Asher, still hovering in the doorway, his small face confused and frightened. He didn't understand why the adults were fighting. Didn't understand that his entire world was about to be torn apart. Her son. Her whole world. The life she'd built through five years of careful hiding and desperate hope. It was over. The peaceful mornings, the quiet safety, the normalcy she'd fought so hard to create—all of it crumbling because of one routine medical test. "You can't just walk in here and—" she started, but Kieran interrupted. "I can. And I will. That's my son, Seraphina. Mine. And whether you like it or not, I'm going to be in his life." Matteo's growl filled the clinic, animalistic and threatening. "Over my dead body." Kieran's smile was sharp and terrible, nothing human in it. "That can be arranged, Silvermoon. Very easily arranged." The two Alphas stared at each other, power crackling between them, and Seraphina realized with sinking horror that this wasn't just about custody or legal rights. This was about to become a war. And her son was standing in the middle of the battlefield.
