CHAPTER 4

DAEMON I could see her from up the stairs, she wasn’t one to keep a low profile, that’s one of the reasons I chose her in the first place and just as I guessed, she was arguing with some i***t again. “Do you want me to intervene?” Philip, my right-hand man asked. “No, I’ll do that myself” I answered, making my way towards her, the way the dress clung to every part of her made me satisfied in ways I couldn’t imagine, madam Shell was right, she would look amazing in such a dress, worthy even. Her scent of strawberry and lavender clung to her skin and I got a whiff of it even harder as she leaned in, kissing me on the cheek subtly. She did know how to make a statement and of course I couldn’t count the eyes watching us, she had drawn so much attention that I was sure it wouldn’t take hours for Father’s lawyer to give me a call. “Mr Calister..she isn’t who you think she is” Cameron protested, Laurel’s ex cowering in fear behind her like the bottom feeder he was. “Do you want my funding out of your donation Miss Pierre?” I raised a brow and she suddenly went quiet. “No sir” She bent her head low and Laurel turned to look at me with a sly smirk tugging at the corner of her lips, her light green eyes drawing me closer to her. “Well then, enjoy the celebrations” I advised, taking Laurel by the waist and taking her aside. The moment we had separated ourselves from the drama, she took my hand away from her waist and glared at me, for some reason, her eyes looked even better when she was angry, fuming even. “What took you so long?” She asked, raising a brow. “You can’t question me. I’m your boss remember?” “But right now, I’m your only ticket to your goal train, so yeah, answer the question” she pressed on, she was one demanding woman. That was something I rarely saw from ladies around me. Either they were so willing that it made me uncomfortable or just carefree as long as I handed them money. “Personal matters” I answered flatly, looking ahead. But I caught her eyes roll at me, typical behavior of my problems. But just then, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Just as planned, he didn’t waste time reaching out to me. “Good evening, Malcolm,” I said the moment I picked up the phone. “Good evening Mr Calister, I’ve heard you are now engaged?” He asked, of course he knew about it. News flew faster than birds around these parts but I didn’t answer. “Be sure to be here tomorrow for the reading and for the time period before the wedding, just as your father requested” he informed me before hanging up the call. He was a simple man with few words which was why his father had him handle the will even at his age. I made my way back to Laurel who was seated, uninterested in the event, her phone pulled out, probably texting the friend she stays with. “We’re leaving” I announced, “Already? But we just got here..I haven’t even had dinner” she protested, running after me till we got into the car. The car was silent, mostly because I stared out the window unsure of what to talk about and thankfully, she did the same, no need to engage in unnecessary chatter. “So we’re really not getting dinner” she broke the silence and I almost burst out laughing. “Yes we are” I answered, talking to the driver “Drive us to the Hilberzs” “That extravagant place?” She asked with a pout “I know a better spot” she insisted. It was a fast food truck. It had been forever since I had such greasy food for dinner, yet, it was more enjoyable than some. “Oh and Laurel..” I called out when she stood at the front porch of her home “Pack a few clothes, we’re headed to my family's house tomorrow” “Wait what..?” She tried to protest, I didn’t give her time to, the car turned around to get home. Laurel Campbell, a lady with wits yet with so many problems money could solve, was just the perfect person for the job. **** Laurel complained and talked the whole flight there but I didn’t stop her from her unnecessary chatter because for once, it was nice to have company while going there, that hell hole they called home. “Welcome home Mr Daemon” Malcom said with a hearty handshake, at least he was the only one who didn’t criticize me. “And you must be Laurel” he said to her, shaking her hand as well in a soft gentlemanly manner “It’s nice to have you here” After having us inside, my eyes caught sight of them, the demons guarding this hellhole of my childhood. “You have a nice home Mrs Calister” Laurel said softly, her arm stretched for a handshake but she didn’t even spare a glance at her, none of them did. “Don’t talk to them, they’re edgy” I whispered “Just stick with me” She nodded in agreement, following me in and taking a seat. “As you all know, it is time to read the will as requested by the late Mr Calister” Malcom started. I already knew the contents of the will. Father told me all about the plan he had set in place, how he wanted the company to be my inheritance but I would have to get a fiancé and get married first to secure my place, so when Malcom read it aloud and Andrew and the rest of them stared at me with malicious intent, I was quite ready. “He can’t seriously have it all!” Andrew, my normally composed half-brother, protested, his lover, my ex-girlfriend, squeezing his palm tightly. “Who says it’s everything?” I asked “You and your mother get the penthouse in Spain, be happy with that” I drawled, taking hold of Laurel’s hand “My bride and I just had an exhausting flight and we need our rest, excuse us” Without warning, I pulled her along, and she didn’t protest like she always would, just until we got to our room door. “You okay?” She asked softly, a bit of concern mixed with her tough tone. “Yeah..I’m just tired” I admitted “Let’s just rest in our room” I gestured to the door when she raised a brow at me like I had asked her for the impossible. “What do you mean by our room?” She inquired. “We can’t stay separately if we want this to work Einstein” I answered “We need to stay together” “Bu..but I can’t share a room with you..” she protested. “Can you shush it? Bring your voice down” I looked out to see if anyone was coming, there weren’t, at least not yet. It wouldn’t take them much to come up to see what was going on. “Oh don’t shush me, I’m not..” I pressed my lips onto hers, letting my mouth explore her softly as I cupped the back of her neck to tilt her in the right direction, hoping she wouldn’t fight me out in the hallway and she didn’t and now, she wasn’t talking, so mission accomplished, she shuts up with a kiss. I pulled away from her and she stayed quiet, her chest heaving with her lips parted slightly, she didn’t say a word, nor did I, I was too busy thinking about how good her lips tasted.
