WHAT'S HE HIDING?

Don't be surprised," Valentin continued, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "I live in a world where vampires exist, but it's very rare to find one. We're like ghosts, hidden in plain sight." I nodded, my mind racing with questions. "How many are there?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Valentin shrugged. "I don't know. A few hundred, maybe? We don't exactly have a census." I laughed, despite the surreal nature of the conversation. "I guess not." Valentin smiled, his fangs glinting. "But we're not all monsters, Ava. Most of us just want to live in peace." I nodded, feeling a sense of wonder wash over me. "I never thought I'd be having this conversation," I admitted. Valentin chuckled. "I never thought I'd be having a roommate who knows my secret." We sat in silence for a moment, the only sound the creaking of the old building. "So, what's it like?" I asked finally, my curiosity getting the better of me. Valentin raised an eyebrow. "What's what like?" "Being a vampire," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. Valentin leaned in, his eyes glinting with a hint of mischief. "It's...complicated," he said, his voice low and husky. "But I'll tell you one thing, Ava. It's never boring." I nodded, feeling a sense of exhaustion wash over me. "I'll ask more questions later," I said, standing up and stretching. "It's late, and I'm beat." Valentin nodded, his eyes understanding. "Of course, Ava. We can talk more tomorrow." I smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him. "Thanks, Valentin. For being honest with me, and for being...normal." Valentin chuckled, his fangs glinting. "I try my best." I headed to my room, my mind racing with thoughts and questions. I couldn't believe I was living with a vampire, but at the same time, I felt a sense of excitement and wonder. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what other secrets Valentin might be hiding. And what it would be like to live with a creature of the night. The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed and curious. I had a million questions for Valentin, and I couldn't wait to ask them. I headed to the kitchen the next day, where I found Valentin sipping a cup of coffee. He looked up, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Morning, Ava," he said, his voice low and smooth. "Sleep well?" I nodded, pouring myself a cup of coffee. "Yeah, I did. Thanks." Valentin smiled, his fangs glinting. I grabbed my backpack and headed out the door, Valentin following close behind. "Have a good day, Ava," he said, his voice low and smooth. I nodded, feeling a sense of excitement and nervousness. I had no idea what the day would bring, but I was eager to find out. As we walked to class, I couldn't help but notice the way people looked at Valentin. They would stare, their eyes fixed on him with a mixture of fascination and fear. In class, Valentin was the center of attention. Everyone seemed to be drawn to him, and he lapped up the attention like a cat laps up cream. At lunchtime, my friends couldn't stop talking about him. "Oh my god, Ava, he's so hot!" one of them squealed. "I know, right?" another friend agreed. "I'm so jealous you get to live with him." I rolled my eyes, feeling a sense of embarrassment. "He's just my roommate, guys," I said, trying to downplay the situation. But they just wouldn't let up. "What's he like?" they asked, their eyes wide with curiosity. I shrugged, feeling a sense of unease. "He's...different," I said, trying to find the right words. As we finished lunch and headed to our next class, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Valentin was definitely a magnet for attention, and I wasn't sure if I was comfortable with that. But as I looked over at him, I saw the way he smiled at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners. And I felt a sense of loyalty towards him, a sense of protectiveness. He might be a vampire, but he was my roommate, and I was going to stand by him. I walked into our Apartment, expecting to see Valentin lounging on his bed, but instead, I found an empty space. I frowned, feeling a sense of unease. Where could he be? I tried to remember if he had mentioned any plans, but my mind was a blank. And then I realized, I didn't even have his phone number. We had never exchanged numbers, and now I was worried. I tried to shake off the feeling, telling myself he was probably just out with friends or running errands. But the unease lingered, and I found myself pacing back and forth in our room. As the hours passed, I grew more and more anxious. What if something had happened to him? What if he was in danger? I tried to distract myself by studying, but my mind kept wandering back to Valentin. Where was he? Was he okay? Just as I was starting to get really worried, I heard the door open. Valentin walked in, looking relaxed and calm, with a small smile on his face. "Hey, Ava," he said, as if he had just been out for a stroll. "What's up?" I felt a mix of relief and annoyance. "Where have you been?" I asked, trying to keep my tone light. "I was worried sick." Valentin raised an eyebrow. "Worried about me? I can take care of myself, Ava." I rolled my eyes. "I know that. But still, it would be nice to know where you are. Especially since we're roommates." Valentin chuckled. "Fair point. I'll make sure to let you know next time." But as he turned to head to his bed, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat. A small puncture wound on his neck, partially hidden by his collar. The next morning, I poured myself a bowl of cereal and sat down across from Valentin, who was sipping a cup of coffee. I tried to act nonchalant, but my mind was racing with questions. "Hey, Valentin, can I ask you something?" I said, trying to sound casual. He looked up at me, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Of course, Ava. What's on your mind?" I hesitated, unsure of how to bring it up. "I noticed you had a wound on your neck yesterday. What happened?" Valentin's expression changed in an instant. He looked away, his jaw clenched, and his eyes flashing with a hint of anger. "I don't know what you're talking about," he muttered, his voice low and rough. I was taken aback by his reaction. "Don't lie to me, Valentin. I saw it. What happened?" But he just ignored me, his eyes fixed on some point beyond my shoulder. I tried to press him further, but he refused to answer, his silence deafening. I sighed, feeling frustrated and worried. What was he hiding? And why was he so determined to keep it from me?
