I THINK I MIGHT BE FALLING FOR YOU

The next day, the rumors spreading around campus seemed to die down a bit, but it was clear that everyone was still talking about the maid's death. And Valentin was at the center of it all. As I walked to class, I couldn't help but notice the way people looked at him. Whispers, glances, and pointing fingers followed him everywhere he went. It seemed like everyone suspected him of being involved in the maid's death. I tried to defend him, to tell people that they didn't know the whole story even though I knew nothing about it myself, but no one wanted to listen. Even my friends seemed distant, as if they were waiting for something to happen before they made up their minds about Valentin. I felt like I was the only one who still believed in him, who still thought that there had to be a reasonable explanation for everything. But as I looked at Valentin, I saw the weight of the world bearing down on him. He looked tired, haunted, and alone. And I realized that I might be the only one who could save him from himself. I sighed, feeling frustrated and helpless. Why should I even care? Valentin wasn't sharing his problems with me, and it seemed like he didn't want my help. But as I looked at him, I saw something that gave me pause. A deep sadness in his eyes, a sense of desperation that he couldn't hide. And I realized that I cared because I had seen the real Valentin, the one he hid from the world. I had seen his kindness, his humor, and his vulnerability. I cared because I knew that he was struggling, and I wanted to help him. Even if he didn't want my help, I couldn't just stand by and watch him suffer. But how could I save him when he wouldn't even open up to me? I felt like I was hitting a brick wall, and I didn't know how to get through it. As I walked back to our apartment, I saw Valentin sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the wall. I sat down beside him, not saying a word. And for a long time, we just sat there, in silence. But somehow, it felt like a start. After sitting there for what felt like hours he finally spoke, "why are you worried about me Ava" "That's because you are my roommate" I said to him. Laughter escaped his lips, a deep, rich sound that surprised me. "That's it?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "You're worried about me because I'm your roommate?" I shrugged, feeling a bit silly. "Well, yeah. And because I care about you, Valentin." He looked at me, his expression softening. "You care about me?" I nodded, feeling a sense of vulnerability. "Yes, I do. You're my friend, Valentin. And I don't like seeing you like this." I said trying to sound casual again. Valentin sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Ava, I...I don't know what's going on. I don't know what's happening to me." I put a hand on his arm, feeling a surge of concern. "What do you mean? What's happening to you?" He looked at me, his eyes filled with a deep fear. "I don't know. But I think it has something to do with...with what I am." I felt a shiver run down my spine. "What you are?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. Valentin nodded, his eyes locked on mine. "Yes. I'm not like you, Ava. I'm not human." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "What do you mean?" I asked, trying to process what he was saying. But Valentin just shook his head, his eyes clouding over. "I can't tell you, Ava. I'm sorry." I know you are a vampire so what other things is there that I don't know. "I suck on human blood" Valentin said I felt a shiver run down my spine as Valentin's words hung in the air. "I suck on human blood," he repeated, his voice low and husky. I tried to process what he was telling me. I had already suspected that he was a vampire, but hearing him say it out loud was a different story. "What else?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What else don't I know?" Valentin's eyes seemed to cloud over, and he looked away. "I've been alive for centuries," he said. "I've seen empires rise and fall. I've walked among kings and queens." I felt like I was listening to a legend, a myth come to life. "What else?" I pressed, my curiosity getting the better of me. Valentin's gaze snapped back to mine, his eyes burning with intensity. "I have powers," he said. "Powers that I don't fully understand. And I'm not alone. There are others like me, Ava. Others who would stop at nothing to get what they want." I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized the danger that Valentin was in. And the danger that I might be in, just by being close to him. "What do you mean?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly. Valentin's face was grim. "I mean that I'm not the only vampire in this city," he said. "And I'm not the most powerful. There are those who would seek to destroy me, to take my place." I felt like I was caught up in a world of darkness and shadow, a world that I didn't fully understand. But I knew one thing - I was in this now, and I wouldn't back down. Valentin's face was grim, his eyes burning with intensity. "I mean that I'm not the only vampire in this city," he said. "And I'm not the most powerful. There are those who would seek to destroy me, to take my place." I felt a chill run down my spine, my heart racing with fear. But then, suddenly, Valentin's expression changed. He looked at me, and burst into laughter. "Gotcha!" he exclaimed, grinning mischievously. I stared at him, confusion etched on my face. "What do you mean?" I asked, feeling a mix of relief and annoyance. "I was joking, Ava," Valentin said, still chuckling. "I'm not really in danger from other vampires. I just wanted to see your reaction." I rolled my eyes, feeling a bit silly. "Well, congratulations. You got me." Valentin's laughter subsided, and he looked at me with a serious expression. "But there is something I need to tell you, Ava. Something real." I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What is it?" Valentin hesitated, then spoke. "I think I might be falling for you, Ava." My heart skipped a beat. "What?" I asked, trying to play it cool. Valentin nodded, his eyes locked on mine. "I know it sounds crazy. But I can't help how I feel." I felt a flutter in my chest, unsure of how to respond.
