The family money had been slowly drained away before he was even born, by bad decisions and old debts. Dexter, as the young man was called, knew he couldn’t lose his home. If he did, his old mother would die in the cold, away from the only home she had ever known. Dexter was a clever young man. Everybody in the nearby village knew he was far too clever for his own good. Whenever anybody told him he was clever, it angered and saddened him.
