Chapter 16: Light in the Darkness

Winter had passed, but the chill still lingered in every corner of Minh's house. The weather had become warmer, but financial difficulties continued to plague the family. Especially after the storm, the costs for repairs and the need for extra work had made their situation even more challenging. Despite this, Minh always tried to maintain a smile and perseverance.

One spring morning, the warm sunlight streamed through the window, but the house remained cold. Minh woke up early, preparing for a long day of work and study. His mother and grandparents had risen early as well and were preparing breakfast. The scarcity was still evident in every meal, but love and care made everything more precious.

“Minh, are you feeling okay? You have an important test today,” his mother asked, her eyes still full of worry but also care.

Minh smiled, trying to reassure her. “I’m fine, Mom. I’ve prepared thoroughly for the test. I’ll do my best.”

Breakfast was a simple bowl of porridge, but the warmth from the love made it taste better. Minh ate quickly to get ready for school and work at the store.

When Minh arrived at school, the classroom felt warmer, but the fatigue from long nights of work and study still lingered. Minh tried to focus on the lessons and not let the difficulties distract him.

The test that day was filled with tension. Minh felt anxious but had prepared well and tried to tackle the exam diligently. When the test ended, Minh felt a sense of relief but still worried about the results.

“Minh, are you okay?” Hương asked with concern. “You look tired.”

Minh smiled, trying to stay positive. “I’m just a bit tired. Thanks for asking.”

Hương nodded, though it was clear she was still worried about Minh. “If you need anything, just let me know. I’m always here to help.”

Minh valued the encouragement from friends, but he didn’t want to burden them with his own problems. He knew he had to face this challenge on his own.

When the school bell rang to end the day, Minh hurried to the store to work. Despite having taken a short nap at noon, the fatigue was still present. Minh worked hard, trying to earn enough to support the family. The store was busy, and Minh had to work at full capacity to serve the customers.

By the end of the day, Minh returned home feeling physically exhausted but satisfied with his hard work. His mother had prepared a simple dinner, and the family gathered together in a warm atmosphere.

“Mom, I worked hard today. But everything is okay now,” Minh said, his voice tinged with fatigue.

His mother smiled, her eyes filled with pride. “You did very well. We will get through every hardship together. I believe your efforts will be rewarded.”

Minh felt a deep sense of emotion hearing his mother’s words. He knew that despite many difficulties, the love and unity of his family were the most important things.

After dinner, Minh returned to his room to finish his homework. The cold still made the room feel stuffy, but Minh didn’t give up. He knew he had to work hard to achieve his dreams and help his family overcome their difficulties.
