Autumn had arrived, bringing with it a biting chill and gentle breezes through the narrow streets. Golden leaves fell in layers, creating thin carpets on the ground. In Minh's small house, autumn was not only a transition in nature but also a time when everything became even more challenging.
One early morning, Minh woke up before sunrise, in a dark and chilly room. The cold of autumn seeped through the thin blanket. Minh crawled out of bed, feeling exhausted and drained. The gnawing hunger made it hard to think about the challenges ahead.
His mother had woken up early as well, preparing a simple breakfast for the family. With limited options, she had only a little rice and some vegetables. As Minh sat down at the table, his mother placed a steaming bowl of rice with a few pieces of boiled vegetables in front of him.
“I made some rice for you. Eat up before you head to school,” she said, her voice somewhat weak.
Minh ate quickly, feeling the hunger and fatigue overwhelming him. “Thank you, Mom,” Minh replied, though he knew the meal wouldn’t completely satisfy him.
After breakfast, Minh prepared to leave the house, bracing himself for the autumn cold. Each step felt heavier than before, knowing that today would be a long day filled with challenges.
When Minh arrived at school, his fatigue was evident. In class, his classmates noticed the difference. Curious and worried glances didn’t make Minh feel any more at ease. Hương, as usual, approached Minh with a concerned expression.
“Minh, you look unwell. Have you been having any problems?” Hương asked, her eyes full of concern.
Minh smiled faintly, trying to hide his exhaustion. “I’m fine, Hương. Just feeling a bit weak.”
Hương wasn’t entirely convinced by Minh’s words. “You need to rest more. Don’t let your health suffer.”
Minh nodded, appreciating Hương’s genuine concern. “Thank you. I’ll try to.”
Throughout the school day, Minh struggled to focus on the lessons, as aches and hunger made it difficult to concentrate. Each class felt like an insurmountable challenge. Finally, when the school bell rang, Minh felt as if he had completed a marathon.
After leaving class, Minh hurried to the store to work. In the afternoon, the store was even busier and the work more stressful. Minh continued to carry goods, serve customers, and clean up. Despite his best efforts, the fatigue and hunger grew stronger. The persistent hunger pangs made his exhaustion even more severe.
That evening, when Minh returned home, his mother was sitting by the old wooden table, preparing dinner. Although she had tried to make the meal more substantial, the food was still very limited.
“You’re back,” his mother said, her eyes showing clear signs of exhaustion. “I’ve made some porridge for Grandpa. He ate a little, but he’s still not feeling better.”
Minh sat down at the table, looking at the steaming bowl of porridge with gratitude. “Mom, I’ll help take care of Grandpa. You should rest a bit.”
His mother nodded, still smiling despite her tiredness. “Thank you. You’ve worked so hard.”
Minh went into Grandpa’s room, feeling the weight of each step. Grandpa lay in bed, his face haggard and weary. Minh sat beside him, gently holding his hand.
“Grandpa, I’m home. How are you feeling?” Minh asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Grandpa looked at Minh with love. “Minh, you’ve worked so hard. Even though I’m not well, you are still my greatest encouragement.”
Minh felt a pang of sadness. “I just want everything to be better for the family.”
Grandpa smiled, though his face was not as lively as before. “Minh, you’ve grown a lot. Grandma and I always believe in you. Even though life is tough, as long as we stay patient and loving, things will get better.”
Minh felt encouraged by his grandfather’s words. No matter how difficult life became, the belief in his family and his perseverance were the sources of motivation that kept him from giving up.
The next day, when Minh woke up, the chill of autumn still surrounded the small room. But Minh knew that despite the difficulties, he had to continue facing the challenges ahead. In the morning, his mother prepared a simple breakfast, and Minh started another challenging day.
When Minh arrived at school, he felt the concerned glances of his friends around him. Their encouragement and concern were important parts of Minh’s life, even though he couldn’t share all the hardships he was going through.
At the end of the school day, Minh returned to the store. The busyness and stress did not ease, and the work remained challenging. But Minh knew that, despite his exhaustion, he had to keep working to help his family through the difficulties.
When night fell, Minh returned home, tired but content. His mother had prepared a simple yet warm meal. The family gathered around the table; though the meal wasn’t plentiful, the love and unity of the family made everything meaningful.
“You’ve worked so hard today. Thank you for working diligently,” his mother said, her eyes full of pride and affection.
Minh smiled, feeling warmth in his heart. “Mom, I will always do everything for the family. We will get through these difficulties together.”
After the family had finished eating and prepared for bed, Minh sat by his desk again. Despite his exhaustion and the autumn chill making everything more uncomfortable, Minh remained determined to study, knowing that every bit of knowledge learned was a step closer to his dreams.
On long nights, with the wind blowing through the window and the cold seeping into the thin blanket, Minh felt that no difficulty or challenge could make him falter. His belief in his family and his perseverance in his work were the sources of motivation that kept him from giving up.
No matter how harsh life became, Minh believed that with perseverance and determination, he would overcome every challenge. And one day, Minh would not only help his family escape hardship but also realize his own dreams, making every sacrifice and difficulty worthwhile.
