Chapter 5
Caramella pocketed the black card.
“Thank you Gayle, really, for everything. But yeah, it's late and it's time for you to go home, hon” she urged the college student to go.
Gayle smiled, “You're welcome Ms. Sugar. I’ll always be thankful for this opportunity to earn extra bucks for taking care of an angel such as Oliver”
After Gayle left, she was left in her own thoughts. Mewling over on what to do next. She lost twenty minutes by running towards her apartment, taking out the emergency bags and talking to Gayle. She must have at most ten minutes to leave the apartment before her aunt arrives.
“It's time to go. Whatever war that pack that abandoned me is in right now, I don’t want Oliver to get involved in it” she clenched her fists as she grabbed her son’s shoes and walked upstairs to wake up Oliver.
‘It’s better for Oliver to live his life as a human child. I will teach him how to hide his Lycan abilities and we will live peacefully together…maybe with a father. Being a Lycan will only get him into danger’
Caramella is a Lycan herself, but was thrown out when her father found out that she got pregnant with another Lycan from a different clan. Although she loves her pack and clan, she despises her father who threw her into the world without anything, not even a chance to explain herself.
“Whatever, that’s all in the past” she murmured to herself for reassurance, “We have Oliver now, Carmilla, we got this” she encouraged herself.
Then she entered Oliver’s room.
She can smell Oliver’s casual pheromones, a scent of pine wood in winter, a very calming scent that reminds her of beautiful snow peaks near her hometown.
Her son’s pheromones calmed her down, making her tense shoulders ease up completely. The thought of impending doom that is her Auntie Deserie is coming to get her was completely pushed out of the back of her head, making her smile when her anxieties are removed. This is one of the best things that Oliver can give her just by being next to her…he can comfort her.
Oliver has shiny straight black hair, white skin and icy blue eyes just like hers. He looks very adorable and anyone who says otherwise will face Caramella’s wrath.
Her serious face mellowed down as she approached her sleeping child, smiling softly as she leaned to shake him gently.
“Olie” She called out, “It's time to wake up, we have something to do”
Oliver stirred, his open mouth closed and opened like a fish.
“Olie, come on. We’ll go on a little vacation, hon” she cooed, squeezing his chubby cheeks lightly before pinching his little nose.
Finally, the three years old woke up. He looks really sleepy, but they have to escape fast or else they will get caught on the elevators or even their car.
“Mommy?” Oliver yawned as he sat up, lazily putting his arms around his mother’s neck, “Welcome back, mommy” then pecked her on the cheek.
Caramella’s smile went higher in happiness, ‘Oh Caramella there is no time to dote on your adorable son! We still have to run away!’ her urgency called her back to her senses.
“Right! Olie, we have to go. Don’t be surprised but we will be going on a very long vacation! Aren’t you excited!” She hugged Oliver back, sweeping him up to her arms to let him sit. Caramella didn’t even wait for Oliver’s answer because she was already putting on her son’s shoes with her other hand.
Oliver can sense her anxiousness that she’s been hiding and hugged his mother tighter, “Mommy, is everything okay?” he whispered silently as if there is someone who is going to catch them.
Caramella’s smile wavered, but she still kept it up. She is already jogging down the stairs, leaving Oliver’s messy bed.
“Everything is fine, Olie” she reassured her son before grabbing the large bags with one hand, not even budging at the heavy weights of the bags.
“But mommy, why are you rushing?” Oliver squeezed his mother’s back that he is hanging into.
Caramella left the lights open and she headed straight towards the door. ‘We have to reach the car before my aunt and her subordinate reach the building. Otherwise, we might intercept. I don’t want to risk a fight while carrying Oliver…we have no choice but to run’ he thought, gritting her teeth. She felt her fangs grow because of her uneasy heart, but ignored it.
Lycans have to control their emotions if they don’t want to transform back into their original selves; the wolves. That’s why maintaining a hundred percent human form is only possible without any vices such as drugs and alcohol, and without having to show or feel intense emotions. Otherwise, they lose control and show everyone that she’s a Lycan.
She was about to open the door when the door knob turned from the other side.
Her eyes widened in shock, almost shrieking in surprise.
“I can smell her, she’s still in here with her son” she heard her aunt’s voice from the other side then the doorknob turned again.
Caramella was really lucky that she managed to lock the door after going in, otherwise, they’re caught.
‘Oh no, oh no, oh no. Crap! I thought I still had time!’ her thoughts are in chaos, gripping Oliver who is leaning on her shoulder, tightly.
“Olie…we might have to jump out the window for this” Caramella warned her son, who yanked his head to look at his mother in surprise.
“Why?”
“Because…someone is playing ‘tag you’re it’ with us! And they will tag us if they find us!” she nervously chuckled before rushing towards the window. She opened the window and stepped on the window sill just when she heard loud thumping behind her.
“Mommy, it looks like they are going to destroy the door” Oliver informed her, “The door is shaking!”
Caramella ignored the sound of breaking wood and instead focused on the ledge of the next building from where she is with a gap of almost fifteen meters away. She swallowed nervously. If she can manage to jump across the road and to the next building, she can escape with a little time between her and her aunt but if she fails, she will be exposing her Lycan abilities to the people walking on the street and even the CCTVs in the area.
‘I have to make this jump!’ she thought before taking in a deep breath.
She climbed up the window sill and squatted down, letting all of her strength into her legs. Her bare feet grew long nails and fur once more, showing her Lycan features.
“Here goes nothing, close your eyes Oliver if you’re scared” she said to her son who seemed excited at this intense game of ‘tag you’re it’.
Bang!
The door flew across the room and at the same time, Caramella jumped, grunting loudly at the force. She jumped into an arch, over the wide four road highway. Oliver giggled happily at what was happening.
Caramella can feel the cold night wind lashing on her skin as she whooshes by, still holding on to Oliver.
“This is so cool, mommy!” Oliver whispered excitedly, grinning from ear to ear.
‘Oh, Olie. If only you know what sort of trouble we are into’ she thought, squeezing her son lightly.
“You can’t run from me Carmilla!”
Caramella can hear her aunt’s loud voice from where she just jumped and soon, she landed on the ledge of the building with an oomph, using her legs to dampen her fall. She knew that her aunt can’t jump that high like she does because she is one of the Lycan’s out there who have the ability to transfer all of their supernatural strength into any part of the body. Even if her Aunt Deserie is stronger than her, she can’t beat her when it comes to jumping.
“Are we winning mommy?” Oliver asked, pointing at the retreating figures from their apartment window.
Caramella huffed, ‘They are going to chase me as soon as they reach the ground floor, I have to gain distance’
“Yes, Olie. Now, we still have to get to the docks if we want to escape our taggers” she pinched Oliver’s small adorable nose, “Let’s go!”
She continued to run, faster than before and her plan is to ride on a small ship that is already departing. Lycan’s are not fond of deep water, as long as she could ride a ship even if she has to use illegal means, her Aunt Deserie cannot pursue her.
‘She would also most likely assume that we would rather take a plane than a ship or hide in the city with someone that I know. And even if they found out that we rode a ship. They will have a hard time taking me back without me knowing about it’ she thought, planning ahead of time.
The docks are still far away, and if her Aunt manages to sniff her then, she is doomed.
“Olie, are you ready to ride your first ship?” Caramella asked as she continued to hop from building to building, avoiding CCTVs and people as she went.
Oliver nodded, “Yes, mommy! I want to ride a ship and float in the water. I want to see dolphins!”
Caramella chuckled, she is very thankful that Oliver is with her. Otherwise, she might have lost her nerves from stress right now.
