Vince's POV
It was utterly impossible. It was unheard of.
Mate. Nina. My wolf was usually a placid beast satisfied with slumber, but now it stirred with a restlessness that I hadn't felt in centuries. It was a strong yearning, a possessive growl deep within me.
The pull had been undeniable during the ceremony, manifesting as a white-hot thrumming centered right where Nina stood beside her mother. Naturally, I assumed it was Sarah. After all, she was my Luna, my chosen mate. But then, the moment Nina moved away, the connection… snapped. Like a wire yanked from the wall.
I felt “panic” at it's finest. The pull hadn't faded, it had merely shifted. It was illogical, impossible. Nina was practically a child, barely a woman. Yet, the wolf within me roared – she was mine. My mate.
This had sent my world into a tailspin.
Denial, that was the first stage.
I downed a glass of particularly potent oak-aged whiskey. It did little to soothe me.
Then came anger. It was directed not at Nina, but at the cruel hand of fate that had dealt me such a twisted deck. Then, right after, a chilling clarity came over me. I needed air, space to process this… this aberration. This madness.
The cool night air whipped at my face as I stepped onto the terrace.
Taking a deep breath, I tried to reason with myself. Maybe it was a delayed reaction, an after effect of the mating bond with Sarah. But the thought held no water. The pull towards Sarah was a comfortable warmth, too easy. But, the connection with Nina was an electric current that sent shivers down my spine and left me breathless.
Denial, it seemed, was a luxury I could no longer afford. The truth, as unwelcome as it was, was staring me in the face. Nina, my clumsy, frustrating, undeniably beautiful stepdaughter, was my mate.
This truth came with a slew of complications that rivaled surpassed jumbled up hunting nets. Sarah, my Luna, my new wife, my chosen mate. The pack wouldn't understand, wouldn't accept such a… deviation from the norm. And Nina? How would she react to discovering she was bound to a man old enough to be her father? The thought of her fear made me want to puke.
Gods, I was a mess. A lovesick teenager trapped in the body of a seasoned Alpha. Shaking my head in self-derision, I knew I couldn't avoid this any longer. I needed to see her, to gauge her reaction, even if it meant facing the potential fallout.
During my walk there, my wedding night replayed in my mind. It held a lot of forced smiles and hollow laughter. Sarah was stunning in white. It gave joy that felt miles away from me. But the ache in my chest throbbed with every thrust.
Every time Sarah leaned in for a kiss, the ache grew stronger, till it advanced into guilt. The champagne flute was useless prop in a charade I desperately wanted to escape.
Dinner was no refuge. Kai launched into his usual routine of "hilarious" jabs. This time, his target was Nina.
I wanted to roar, to defend Nina from it all.
With a deep breath, I squared my shoulders and headed towards her room. The damp towel, a poor attempt to cool my burning skin after the shower, felt ridiculously inadequate. But before I could knock, the door flew open, revealing Nina’s tear-streaked face. The sight of her before me, the softness in her eyes, did something to my tough self.
"Nina," I rumbled, my voice rougher than usual. "May I come in?" It was a plea for a chance to explain, to apologize, or perhaps, just to be near her.
Every nerve ending in my body seemed to scream her name. The closeness, it was all too much. My senses went on high alert.
For a horrifying second, a forbidden image flashed in my mind – Nina, her lips soft and yielding beneath mine. The possessive growl from my wolf grew. This was my stepdaughter, a woman I was supposed to protect, not consume with such naughty desires.
Blinking rapidly, I forced the image away, shoving the possessive beast back into its cage. This wasn't the time, the place, or the most appropriate reaction to a young woman clearly in distress.
My knuckles were white as they gripped the doorknob. The scent of lavender and something else, something uniquely Nina, hit me like a physical blow. This time, my wolf wasn't napping in the corner of my soul. It whined with an hunger that left me cold. This wasn't right. This shouldn't be happening.
She was a child, for Pete's sake. A frustrating, undeniably beautiful child, and here I was, a grown man with hormones the size of grizzly bears, fantasizing about… No. Shut it down, Vince. Shut it down!
My wolf whined, a pathetic sound that did little to soothe the ache throbbing between my legs.
Take her. Now. Claim her.
I gritted my teeth. Claiming my mate involved a ceremony, not a poorly timed visit after a dinner meltdown.
"Nina," I rumbled, my voice rougher than sandpaper. "May I come in?" I tried again. Did I really sound like a lovesick teenager begging his crush for a homework extension?
She hesitated. Then, to my surprise, she stepped aside. The small gesture sent a rush through me, and it had nothing to do with fatherly concern.
I slipped into her room. Where would I begin? The truth about the bond- it all demanded to be addressed. But how? Where do you even begin to explain something so… impossible?
I took a few steps in. My wolf strained against its invisible leash, its growls echoing in my mind.
Take her. Now. Before it's too late.
I forced a smile, the effort making my face ache. "Hey," I said. "What happened down there?"
Nina's eyes narrowed. "Like you don't know," she spat. "Kai was his usual charming self, and my mother…" she trailed off, a single tear escaping her eyes.
Gods, the urge to wipe that tear away myself was a physical sensation. But I held myself back, clenching my fists until my knuckles turned white. This wasn't the time for heroics, or worse, acting on the urges that had me feeling like a teenage werewolf on heat.
"Look," I started, my voice gruff. "Whatever happened, I…" The words died in my throat. What could I possibly say? That I understood her pain, when the reason behind it was something I couldn't understand.
My wolf whined again. This whole situation was a joke.
Taking a deep breath, I tried a different approach. "You know," I said, my voice light, a touch sarcastic even to my own ears, "maybe you should have stayed with your friends tonight. At least they wouldn't make you cry."
Nina scoffed, a humorless sound that ripped at something deep within me. "Oh, don't worry," she said. "I'm used to holding back the tears around here."
Ooh, the bed, it's much more convenient now. Take her! Now!
My wolf didn't fail to remind me that we were sitting on her bed.
Take her. Now. End this charade.
I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing the beast back into its cage.
Seduce her
My gut churned. Seduce her? The very idea made me want to take a cold shower – preferably one lasting several hours. Yet, my wolf, had a point, a sickening, razor-sharp point. My body was a traitor. Every nerve ending screamed Nina's name.
"Shut it," I growled, not at Nina, but at the traitorous voice in my head. "She's a child. This is… this is wrong on so many levels."
The wolf scoffed.
"Child? Look at her, Vince. Hurt… a curiosity you can exploit. She'll come around, especially when she feels your touch."
Exploit? Was that what this was about now? I, a seasoned Alpha, reduced to a… a what? A predator preying on a vulnerable young woman? The answer, horrifyingly enough, seemed to be yes.
Nina sniffled, wiping a stray tear with the back of her hand. The hitch in her breath sent heat through me. It was wrong, all wrong, but the urge wouldn't be denied.
I took a leaned forward, the floorboards groaning. Nina flinched. It was a slap of reality, a cold reminder of the monstrous thing I was about to do.
"Nina," I started, my voice raspy. "I…" The words wouldn't come. How do you explain the inexplicable? How do you confess to a wanting that defied every law, every moral code you held dear?
The wolf seemed to sense my frustration, and so it roared in frustration.
Just touch her, Vince! A simple gesture, a show of comfort. It'll snowball from there. Trust me.
A single bead of sweat trickled down my temple. Trust the wolf? The voice that was urging me down a path of darkness, a path that could shatter not just my life, but Sarah's and Nina's as well?
My hand moved out of their own accord, reaching out. It hovered in the air, inches from Nina's cheek. The heat radiating from her skin was intoxicating. One touch, that's all it would take. One touch, and I might cross the line from protector to… something far more dangerous.
But the goddess knew I urged to bury myself deep inside her. Then, it slammed into me. One moment I was staring at Nina, her tear-streaked, the next I was bridging the space between us. My hands, propelled by an unseen force, cupped her cheeks, my thumbs brushing away the tracks on her skin.
Before I could stop myself, before the enormity of what I was doing registered, I leaned in. My lips met hers in a searing kiss. It was my way of conveying a comfort I couldn't express with words. It was wrong, every fiber of my being screamed at me. This wasn't right.
Her lips were soft and yielding. It awakened something that left me reeling. My hands drifted down, one tangling in her hair, the other skimming the bare skin of her shoulder.
The world dissolved into a haze of heat and desperation. I was drowning in a sea of forbidden desire, with none other than my wolf at the helm, steering me towards a dangerous reef.
My mind swirled as I leaned closer to Nina, my heart pounding with a desire I could barely contain. "Nina," I murmured. "I need… you."
As my hands roamed beneath her top, the clasp of her bra became a frustrating thing to undo. But when I cupped her buttocks, a soft moan escaping her lips.
Her touch brushed over my arousal, sending a shockwave of pleasure through me. "f**k!" I gasped, staggering back in surprise.
"I'm sorry," Nina stammered, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I didn't mean to..."
But before she could finish her sentence, my desire overcame every ounce of restraint. "I want you, Nina," I confessed, my voice husky with longing. "I want to bury myself inside you.”
I pressed my lips against hers, drowning out her apologies. I reached for her bra, my fingers deftly snapping open the clasp.
Then, a sharp rapping on the door stopped my movement.
A knock.
The sound was like a bucket of ice water dumped over my head. It was a sound that brought me crashing back to reality. What had I almost done?
I tore my lips away from Nina's, gasping for breath. Our eyes met, the look in them was a branding iron.
V-Vince?" she stammered, her voice nearing a whisper.
