THAT NIGHT, HELEN AND I have just finished dinner and go, as we do as often as possible, into the church to say Evening Prayer. The door is unlocked, as it always is until I lock up at night, and we slip into the dimly lit place where, everyday, God comes once again to his people on earth. I see someone in a pew, praying. Since I often mention that anyone here at this time is more than welcome to join us, I am not surprised to hear Dominic Trent making the responses along with Helen. Given all that we have been through, the words that begin Evening Prayer are especially poignant: “Oh God, come to my assistance, O Lord, make haste to help me.” The Church, knowing that this is prayed at the end of a long day by people who are weary, keeps this form short and Helen and I stand back up and h
