CHRIS WAS QUIET in the car until Vance said, “Can you tell me what this surgery involves?”
“Unfortunately, I can, but can it wait until we’re out of the car?”
“Sure.”
“When do you have to be back in your office?”
“I’m good for all day, if necessary. Why?”
“Do you mind driving us to The Loop? I haven’t eaten since yesterday and I’m hungry. It’ll be my treat.”
“Sure, Chris, I don’t mind a bit.”
Vance parked at the restaurant and they went inside to place their orders. When they were on the deck eating, Chris said, “You asked me a question earlier.”
“Yeah, I did.”
“Here’s the unpleasant news. They’ll probably remove part of my lower colon and my rectum. That will leave me wearing an ostomy bag. Do you know what those are?”
“Sure, my grandfather had one.
