chapter 8 The Shadows King

Chapter 8: The Shadow King The boardroom on the 50th floor of Sterling Towers was a cold expanse of glass and chrome. Outside, the city looked like a toy set, a kingdom waiting for a ruler. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne and betrayal. Victoria Sterling sat at the head of the long mahogany table, her eyes gleaming. Beside her, Alistair fidgeted with his tie, unable to hide a nervous smirk. Twelve board members sat in silence, looking at the legal document that would officially declare Maximilian Sterling "incapacitated" and transfer all voting rights to Victoria. "It is a sad day," Victoria began, her voice a masterpiece of fake grief. "My brother fought hard, but the doctors have confirmed there is no hope. For the sake of the company, we must move forward." She picked up the gold fountain pen. Her hand didn't shake. The Uninvited Guest Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the hall didn't just open—they were thrown wide. The board members gasped. Victoria’s pen stalled a millimeter above the paper. Walking through the doorway was Elara. She was dressed in a simple, modest dress, her head held high, her eyes burning with a quiet, holy fire. She looked nothing like the "poor village girl" they thought they had bought. "Stop!" Elara’s voice rang out, steady and clear. "This meeting is illegal. The Chairman is not incapacitated." Victoria let out a sharp, jagged laugh. "Elara, dear, grief has unhinged you. Guards, take her back to the manor." "I wouldn't do that if I were you," a new voice boomed. Marcus Thorne, the lead counsel, stepped out from behind Elara. He held a stack of fresh legal injunctions. "I have filed an emergency stay. This board cannot vote until a second medical opinion is recorded." "Marcus, you're fired!" Alistair yelled, standing up. "The doctors already spoke! Max is a vegetable!" "Is he?" Elara asked, a small smile playing on her lips. She stepped aside, clearing the path to the door. The Return The sound of footsteps hit the marble floor. Thud. Thud. Thud. They were slow, deliberate, and heavy. The silhouette of a tall man appeared in the doorway. He was leaning slightly on a silver-headed cane, but his shoulders were square and his head was high. Maximilian Sterling walked into the room. The silence was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning. Victoria’s face turned a ghostly shade of grey. The pen slipped from her fingers, staining the white legal document with a blot of black ink. "Victoria," Max said. His voice wasn't a whisper anymore. It was the roar of a lion returning to his pride. "Alistair. I hope I’m not late for the vote." He walked to the head of the table. Every board member stood up instinctively, a reflex of fear and respect. Max looked down at his sister, his eyes like chips of blue ice. "Get out of my chair," he commanded. The Defiance Victoria scrambled back, her chair screeching against the floor. "Max... it’s a miracle! We were just... we were trying to protect the company!" "You were trying to bury me," Max said, his hand slamming onto the table. He turned to the board. "My sister and brother have spent the last year attempting to slow-poison me and defraud this board. Marcus has the recordings. Leo, my driver, has the evidence of the illegal medications." He looked at Elara, and his expression softened for a fraction of a second—a look of pure, undivided devotion. "And this woman," Max continued, pointing to Elara, "the woman you tried to use as a pawn, is the only reason I am standing here today. She is not just my wife. She is the majority shareholder of my private estate, as of this morning." Alistair looked like he was going to vomit. Victoria looked like she wanted to kill. "You'll never prove it!" Victoria hissed. "You're still weak, Max! You can't run this company alone!" "He isn't alone," Elara said, stepping to Max's side. She placed her hand on his arm, and Max covered her hand with his, locking them together. "And as for proof... the police are waiting in the lobby."
