----Elaine--- Carla had been in Kave’s office for what felt like forever. I’d passed by once earlier and heard the low murmur of their voices through the closed door, her tone breaking now and then like she was on the verge of tears. By the time she finally came out, her face was blotchy, her eyes red, and she looked like a scolded child. I froze in the hallway, clutching the edge of the banister as she walked past me.
