Elaine The first thing I noticed as I slowly woke up was the noise in my head. Not real noise, but thoughts—so many of them—rushing around like wild birds trapped in a cage. It felt like someone had a remote control and was flipping through channels in my brain. I couldn’t hold onto any one thought. They came and went too fast. I moved my head from side to side, trying to push them away. “Ah!” I gasped softly. Pain shot through my neck. It was stiff and sore, like I had slept in a strange position. I tried to move my arms and legs, but they felt heavy, like I had just run a marathon. My whole body was tired, slow, and aching. I frowned. Opening my eyes felt like too much work. So I stayed still and tried to focus. The thoughts were still there, but now I could feel emotions too. Regret.
