Flushing at the insult and the obvious implication behind Carla’s words, I wanted to sink straight into the floor. But I knew I couldn’t. If I let her walk all over me now, if I didn’t stand my ground, I would never be respected as Kave’s mate. Swallowing down my nerves, I pushed myself to my feet, circling around the table until I stood face-to-face with her. My voice came out low, edged with the faintest growl.
“I’m perfectly capable of being Kave’s mate, and I don’t appreciate your comments. If you have a problem with me, say it to my face instead of hiding behind snide little innuendos.”
Carla blinked at me in surprise, clearly not expecting the challenge. “Why, Elaine! I assure you, I meant nothing at all. It’s just that Kave and I are old friends...” Her voice faltere
