Chapter 6 : BEFORE THE DAWN

701 Words
The mansion had fallen into a peaceful silence. Outside, the rain had stopped, leaving the garden glistening beneath the silver moonlight. A cool breeze drifted through the slightly open windows, carrying the fresh scent of earth after the storm. Harlow wandered into the living room, unable to sleep. The grand piano stood quietly in one corner, while an old record player rested on a polished wooden cabinet. Curious, she brushed away a thin layer of dust and gently placed the needle onto the record. A soft melody filled the room. She smiled. "I didn't know this still worked." "You found my mother's favorite record." Ryan's voice startled her. She turned to see him standing at the entrance, his tie loosened and the top buttons of his shirt undone. Without his usual cold expression, he looked less like the powerful CEO everyone feared and more like a man simply searching for a moment of peace. "I'm sorry," Harlow said quickly. "I should have asked before touching it." Ryan slowly walked closer. "You don't have to apologize." The music continued to play, wrapping the room in a quiet warmth. Harlow laughed softly. "I've always wanted to learn how to dance." Ryan raised an eyebrow. "But?" "I never had anyone to dance with." Her words lingered between them. Ryan looked at her for a long moment before quietly extending his hand. "Would you like to learn now?" Harlow blinked in surprise. "You dance?" "A little." A nervous smile spread across her face as she placed her hand in his. His fingers closed gently around hers. He guided her to the center of the room. "Relax," he murmured. "You're thinking too much." "Easy for you to say." A quiet chuckle escaped him. It was rare. And somehow, hearing it made Harlow's heart race even faster. Ryan rested one hand lightly at her waist while keeping the other intertwined with hers. "Follow my steps." "I'll probably step on your feet." "I'm willing to take the risk." The music carried them forward. At first, Harlow stumbled more than once. Each time she apologized, Ryan simply smiled and steadied her without complaint. Little by little, her movements became lighter. Her nervous laughter blended with the melody filling the room. For the first time in years, Ryan found himself laughing too. Not because he had to. Because he wanted to. As the song slowed, so did their movements. Neither of them noticed how close they had become. The world beyond the mansion seemed to disappear. There was only the quiet music... Only the warmth between them... Only the steady rhythm of two hearts learning to beat together. Harlow looked up. "I wish moments like this could last forever." Ryan swallowed hard. "So do I." The words escaped before he could stop them. She searched his eyes. There was no distance left between them. Only honesty. Slowly, she rested her head against his shoulder. Ryan closed his eyes for a brief moment before wrapping his arms around her. He held her carefully, as though afraid she might disappear if he let go. Neither spoke. They simply stood there while the final notes of the music echoed through the silent mansion. When the record finally stopped spinning, neither of them moved. Outside, dawn slowly began to paint the sky in shades of gold. Warm sunlight slipped through the curtains the next morning. Harlow woke first, feeling unusually comfortable. She slowly opened her eyes and smiled as she remembered the night before. The dance. His laughter. The way he had looked at her. As she stepped into the kitchen, she found Ryan already there, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt while preparing breakfast. He glanced over his shoulder. "Good morning." She smiled, unable to hide the happiness in her eyes. "Good morning." Ryan placed a warm cup of coffee in front of her. "I figured I'd cook today." She looked at him teasingly. "Trying to make up for my disastrous soup?" He laughed softly. "I don't think anything could top that." Harlow giggled, and soon they were laughing together. Neither of them realized that somewhere beneath the growing warmth... Ryan's hidden truth was becoming heavier with every beat of his heart.
