Chapter 5: The First Feel(Part 1)

827 Words
Morning sunlight streamed through the towering windows of the Sterling mansion, painting the polished marble floors in shades of gold. The silence that had once ruled the house no longer felt empty. It had softened. The grand halls that had echoed with distant footsteps now carried quiet conversations, gentle laughter, and the comforting rhythm of two people slowly learning how to exist under the same roof. Harlow stood in the spacious kitchen wearing one of Ryan's oversized white shirts over a pair of comfortable shorts. Her hair was tied into a messy bun, a few loose strands framing her face as she carefully followed a recipe on her phone. She frowned. "Why does every recipe make cooking look so easy?" She added another spoonful of salt before tasting the soup. The moment it touched her tongue, she made a face. "Oh no..." Just then, Ryan walked into the kitchen, dressed sharply for work in a charcoal suit. His hair was neatly combed, and the expensive watch on his wrist reflected the morning light. He stopped in the doorway. The sight before him caught him completely off guard. The elegant woman who always looked composed was standing in the middle of his kitchen with flour on her cheek, soup splashed across the counter, and an expression that looked ready to surrender. He couldn't stop the smile that escaped. "What happened here?" he asked, folding his arms. Harlow turned so quickly that she almost dropped the spoon. "I was trying to surprise you with breakfast." Ryan looked around the battlefield that used to be his spotless kitchen. "I can see that." She lowered her head. "I'm sorry. I think I ruined everything." Ryan walked closer. Instead of criticizing her, he reached out and gently wiped the flour from her cheek with his thumb. "You've got something here." Their eyes met. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Harlow's heart skipped. Ryan cleared his throat and stepped back. "It's fine. We'll make breakfast together." "We?" "You started the disaster. I'll help finish it." A small laugh escaped her lips. It was soft. Real. Ryan found himself listening to it longer than he should have. Half an hour later, the kitchen looked much better. Ryan rolled up the sleeves of his expensive shirt without a second thought, while Harlow carefully copied everything he did. "I didn't know you could cook," she admitted. "My mother taught me." The answer came so naturally that he didn't realize what he had revealed until silence settled between them. Harlow looked at him gently. "You don't talk about her much." Ryan's expression hardened almost instantly. "There isn't much to say." The warmth that had filled the room faded. Harlow noticed it immediately. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked." Ryan looked at her. She wasn't curious. She wasn't trying to dig into his past. She simply cared. That realization unsettled him. He forced another smile. "It's alright." For reasons he couldn't explain, he wanted to tell her everything. The lies. The hatred. The revenge. But he swallowed every word. Not yet. After breakfast, Ryan drove Harlow to a nearby bookstore she had mentioned wanting to visit. "You remembered?" "You said it last week." She smiled. "You actually listen." He simply shrugged. "I remember important things." Harlow turned toward the window to hide the blush creeping across her cheeks. Every little gesture made her heart believe this marriage had become real. She was falling. Slowly. Completely. Exactly as Ryan had planned. Yet instead of satisfaction... He felt something dangerously close to guilt. Inside the bookstore, Harlow wandered between the shelves with the excitement of a child discovering a treasure chest. Ryan followed a few steps behind, watching her admire every title. She stopped in front of a collection of classic novels. "I've always wanted these." She reached for one but paused after seeing the price. Quietly, she placed it back. Ryan noticed everything. Without saying a word, he walked to the cashier while Harlow continued browsing another aisle. Ten minutes later, they left the store. As they reached the car, Ryan handed her a paper bag. "What's this?" "Open it." She peeked inside. Every book she had admired was neatly packed together. Her eyes widened. "Ryan..." "You said you wanted them." "They're expensive." "So?" "I can't let you spend this much on me." Ryan looked at her for a long moment. Then he gently placed the bag back into her hands. "My wife shouldn't have to put back something that makes her happy." The words struck Harlow's heart with unexpected force. Before she realized what she was doing, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. Ryan froze. Her embrace was warm. Gentle. Trusting. She whispered against his chest, "Thank you..." Ryan slowly lifted one hand and rested it lightly on her back. For the first time... The hug didn't feel like part of the plan. It felt... Right.
