Fang Hao held the paternity test in his hand, glancing over it once more. His heart ached again, pierced by the cold conclusion written on it.
He pounded the steering wheel in frustration, howling and sobbing loudly in his car. The test revealed that his twins had two different biological fathers. His daughter was fathered by an unknown man, while his son was his own.
As a general practitioner at the provincial hospital, Fang Hao fully understood the implications of this. His wife had cheated on him, giving him a heavy, humiliating blow. And the way it all happened made it unbearably revolting.
He remembered the first time with his wife was on their wedding day, and the following month she got pregnant. The day after the wedding, they went abroad for their honeymoon—just the two of them. If another man had managed to intrude, it must have been on the wedding day. And the timing was eerily close to when he was with her.
The sheer shame of it!
"Su Rou, why did you do this to me?" he cried out.
His wife, Su Rou, was 28 years old, the deputy CFO of Jiulong Group in Jiangdong City, and renowned as the most beautiful woman in town.
Four years ago, Fang Hao had just graduated from Jiangdong University’s medical school with nothing to his name. By chance, he met his senior, Su Rou, and the two quickly fell in love, eventually getting married.
"I came from the countryside, my parents are old, and my family went broke trying to put me through school. After graduating, I married Su Rou, the school beauty, and settled down in Jiangdong City. I thought it was a blessing from heaven, but in the end, it was all a complete lie!"
"Did you ever love me?"
"Why did you deceive me?"
"Why, on our wedding day, were you still with another man? Why did you have to humiliate me like this?"
"I’ve been blind for four years! Four whole years! How foolish I’ve been!"
…
Fang Hao had no idea how long he sat in the car until he was startled by a barrage of phone calls. It was from the kindergarten teacher.
He pulled himself together and answered, learning that it was already 6:30, and his two children were still waiting at the kindergarten. The teacher hadn’t been able to reach Su Rou, so she had called him instead.
"Honey, there’s a company gala tonight. I have to attend and will be back late. You’ll need to pick up the kids," Su Rou had reminded him that morning, and now he felt a strange melancholy wash over him.
Su Rou had mentioned work events a few times before, saying she’d be home late. In their daily life, she often claimed to be working overtime or spending time with colleagues or friends. She’d always let him know before heading out.
Looking back now, Fang Hao realized that these outings might have been times she was with another man. He had never suspected her of betrayal, busying himself at home with their children, medical books, and writing papers.
The next thing Fang Hao knew, he was at the kindergarten, picking up the kids and heading home.
At home, gazing at the same old couch they hadn’t replaced in years, Fang Hao’s mind conjured vivid images of his wife being intimate with another man—on that couch, on the carpet, on the chairs, in the kitchen, even on the marital bed, a space that was supposed to be his, now violated.
A wave of nausea hit him, and he rushed to the bathroom, vomiting bile into the toilet.
"Daddy… here’s some tissue."
A tender voice came from behind him—it was his daughter, Fang Jiajia.
"Get away from me!"
For a moment, he felt a warm sense of comfort—his daughter was so thoughtful—but then the reality struck him. This wasn’t his child, she was another man’s! He felt the disgust rising again.
He shoved her away, and she fell, her head hitting the floor as she let out a wail.
"Daddy doesn’t love Jiajia anymore! Daddy doesn’t care about Jiajia!"
I’m not your father. Your father is… Fang Hao almost shouted the words but stopped himself when he saw her innocent, tear-streaked face. His heart softened. He had raised this girl for three years—his wife’s betrayal and that man’s cruelty weren’t her fault.
Su Rou had betrayed him, and that scoundrel had humiliated him, but the child was innocent. Fang Hao rushed over, picked Jiajia up, and held her close as they both cried.
"Daddy, don’t cry, don’t cry. Jiajia’s okay. I’m a good girl, I’m very brave," she said.
Though she was scared, her words only made her cry even harder.
In the other room, his son, Fang Tiantian, wandered in with a tablet in hand, adjusting his blue corrective glasses as he shook his head, "Daddy, you’ve been drinking. I’m going to tell Mommy so she can punish you!"
Fang Hao turned and looked at his son with tear-filled eyes—this child was his own flesh and blood.
"Daddy, don’t cry. Don’t cry. Jiajia fell down on her own. She’s not hurt," his daughter said, wiping away Fang Hao’s tears.
"Daddy, I’m hungry. When are we having dinner?" Tiantian said, completely unfazed.
Fang Hao gently touched Jiajia’s head and checked for any injuries—there was no blood.
"Did you hurt yourself?" he asked softly.
"Daddy, Jiajia’s hungry too. I was too hungry earlier, so I couldn’t stand properly, and that’s why I fell. But I’m okay now."
These kids are innocent. Why am I taking this out on them?
After pulling himself together, Fang Hao washed his face and began preparing dinner for the two children. He sat on the side, watching them devour their food. On any other day, he would have felt deeply gratified and happy, perhaps even pulling out his digital camera to record the moment for a sweet memory to cherish later. But now, all he could feel was bitterness.
His daughter wasn’t his own; he had unknowingly raised another man’s child for three years, caring for her through all the messy and challenging moments. After the children finished eating, Fang Hao followed the same routine: he helped them wash up, changed their clothes, and dried their hair before letting them play in their room.
When everything was done, Fang Hao felt completely drained, as if all the energy had been sucked out of him. An overwhelming emptiness gnawed at him. He called his wife, but her phone was off.
"Damn it! Off to be with that bastard again, aren’t you? You slut!"
In a fit of rage, he hurled his phone onto the couch. It bounced onto the carpet, then slid across the clean floor until it reached a corner.
Suddenly, Fang Hao noticed a bottle of "Mendao Donkey" liquor and some cigarettes lying in the corner.
"Mendao Donkey? Are you mocking me for being a stubborn fool?"
"Yes, I’m a fool with a green hat!" he scoffed bitterly, reaching for the bottle and pouring himself a drink.
Divorce? The terrifying thought surfaced in his mind again. His wife had been unfaithful, their marriage was a lie, and the paternity test proved his daughter wasn’t his. Was there any point in staying? Divorce seemed inevitable.
But then, an even more suffocating reality pressed down on him, making it hard to breathe.
The house had been paid for by his mother-in-law and was in Su Rou’s name. The car in the garage was his father-in-law’s old car, which had been passed to him as a hand-me-down for commuting. They had some savings, but most of it came from his wife’s earnings, and she held the bank cards and the passbooks. Even his job at the hospital had been secured through his father-in-law’s connections.
If they divorced, none of these things would be his.
Even his only biological child, his son, was closer to his wife than to him.
"What do I have left?" Fang Hao’s breathing grew labored, his body stiffening like stone.
"Am I really this useless? Am I really worth nothing?"
"No, I still have my medical skills! Even without the house, the car, the wife, or the job, I could take my son back to my hometown and make a living as a doctor."
"But no, I refuse to go back in defeat!"
"My parents sacrificed so much for me. If they knew I’d failed like this, it would kill them."
"All the people in my village think I’ve made it. I went to college, married a beautiful city girl, had twins, got a house and a car, and a job at a big hospital. I’m the role model for the younger generation in my village. If I go back, defeated and dragging my son behind me, I’ll be the laughingstock of everyone!"
"Even if I didn’t have Su Rou or this hospital job, four years ago, I could have stayed in Jiangdong City. Even if my career progressed slower, I would still have a wife and children. So, I am still myself."
"I’ve been a fool for years, wearing this green hat for years, and now you expect me to leave like a beaten dog?"
"I refuse!"
Fang Hao’s thoughts swirled in his mind, alternating between moments of clarity and confusion. The idea of divorce had taken root and wouldn’t let go.
"Su Rou, why did you do this to me?"
