Chapter 2: Nowhere to Run

1124 Words
The night air hit like ice. I didn’t realize how far I’d walked until the pack gates were nothing but shadows behind me. No guards stopped me. No one called my name. Just like that… I was erased. A hollow laugh bubbled in my throat, but it died before it could escape. My chest still ached from the rejection sharp, pulsing, like something inside me had been torn out and left to bleed. Mate bonds weren’t supposed to break like that. Not without leaving scars. I pressed my hand harder against my stomach, grounding myself. “I’m okay,” I whispered, though my voice shook. “I’m… fine.” The lie tasted bitter. Because I wasn’t fine. I had no home. No rank. No protection. And worse… I had a secret that could get me killed. A rustle cut through the silence. My body went still. Slowly, I turned. Nothing. Just trees. Darkness. The distant hum of insects. But my wolf stirred uneasily inside me, pacing, restless. Someone was watching. I forced my legs to move again, faster this time, my breath coming quicker as unease crawled up my spine. Think, Aria. Think. The nearest neutral territory was miles away. Too far to reach before dawn. And alone? I wouldn’t make it. Another sound closer this time. A twig snapping under weight. My heart slammed against my ribs. “Who’s there?” I called, hating the way my voice trembled. Silence answered. Then A low chuckle. “Look what we have here…” Three figures stepped out from the shadows. Rogues. The scent hit me instantly wild, unclaimed, dangerous. My pulse spiked. Rogues didn’t follow rules. They didn’t care about rank. And a lone female? I was prey. “Well, well,” one of them said, his eyes dragging slowly over me. “A pretty little Luna wandering all alone.” “Not a Luna anymore,” another added with a grin. “Didn’t you hear? She got rejected.” My stomach dropped. How did they Of course. News traveled fast. Especially humiliation. “Please,” I said, forcing steadiness into my voice as I took a cautious step back. “I don’t want trouble.” They laughed. “Oh, but trouble wants you,” the first one replied. They moved closer. Instinct screamed at me to run. But I knew better. They were faster. Stronger. And I I was barely holding myself together. “Stay back,” I warned, though there was no real power behind it. One of them lunged. I reacted on instinct, shoving him away with everything I had. He stumbled but only for a second. Then his expression darkened. “Feisty,” he muttered. The next second, he grabbed my wrist. Pain shot up my arm as his grip tightened. “Let go!” I struggled, panic rising fast now. “Relax,” he said, his voice low, dangerous. “We’re just going to have a little fun” “Don’t touch her.” The voice sliced through the air like a blade. Cold. Commanding. Deadly. The rogue froze. All three of them turned at once. A figure stepped out of the darkness. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Power rolled off him in waves thick, suffocating, impossible to ignore. Even the forest seemed to fall silent. My breath caught. Because I recognized that kind of presence. Not just an Alpha. Something… more. The rogues stiffened. “Who the hell are you?” one of them demanded, though his voice lacked the confidence from before. The stranger didn’t answer. He kept walking forward, slow and deliberate. Each step heavier than the last. A warning. “Let her go,” he said. Not loud. Not aggressive. But absolute. The rogue holding me hesitated. Just for a second. Then he scoffed. “And if I don’t?” The man stopped. Lifted his gaze. And in that moment Everything changed. Even from where I stood, I could feel it. The shift in the air. The pressure. The raw, terrifying dominance. My knees nearly gave out. Because his eyes They weren’t just Alpha eyes. They were something darker. Something ancient. “I won’t ask again,” he said quietly. The rogue released me instantly. All three of them stepped back. Fear replaced the arrogance on their faces. “Let’s go,” one muttered. They didn’t argue. Didn’t fight. They just… ran. Gone within seconds. Silence returned. But it wasn’t comforting. Not with him standing there . Watching me. I swallowed hard, my heart still racing. “Th-thank you,” I managed, my voice unsteady. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, his gaze dropped slowly, deliberately To my stomach. My breath hitched. No. There was no way he could “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said finally. His voice was calmer now. But no less dangerous. “I didn’t have a choice,” I replied, instinctively stepping back. His eyes lifted to mine again. Sharp. Assessing. Like he was seeing more than I was saying. “Everyone has a choice,” he said. Something about the way he said it made my chest tighten. “I was rejected,” I snapped before I could stop myself. “Thrown out like I meant nothing.” Silence. Then A faint, unreadable expression crossed his face. “Then they made a mistake.” My breath caught. Before I could respond, he took a step closer. I tensed immediately. “Relax,” he said. “If I wanted to hurt you… I already would have.” Not exactly comforting. But… true. “I can take you somewhere safe,” he continued. Safe. The word felt foreign. Dangerous, even. Because nothing in my life had ever been truly safe. “Why?” I asked, suspicion lacing my tone. His gaze held mine. Steady. Intense. “Because,” he said slowly, “you’re more valuable than you realize.” A chill ran down my spine. “What does that mean?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he turned slightly, as if expecting me to follow. “Come with me,” he said. “Or stay here…” His eyes flicked briefly to the darkness where the rogues had disappeared. “…and take your chances.” My heart pounded. Every instinct screamed at me to be careful. But another voice quieter, deeper Told me this moment mattered. That this man… Wasn’t just a coincidence . I hesitated. Then tightened my hand over my stomach. For my child… I had to survive. Even if it meant stepping into the unknown. “Fine,” I said. One word. One decision. That would change everything. Because I didn’t know it yet But the man I had just agreed to follow… Was far more dangerous than the rogues.
