Chapter 4

Evelyn’s pov Lucinda watched as my bag was dragged away by Adrian’s servants. She has not been happy with the arrangement and seeing that I get to command people and have power over her made her itch. “Well….well….guess who won?” I heard her say but I chose to ignore her as I kept packing. My room was almost empty, leaving just my bed and my furniture. I walked past her, as I was done with packing. I know people expect me to look back and be emotional about leaving but for a fact I feel relieved. I walked down the stairs to the living room where Mom and Dad were seated. I pulled out the contract I signed yesterday and dropped it on the table in front of Dad. “That's the contract. The main wedding is this week on Saturday and you have been specially invited by Adrian himself.” I told them the news, as my dad went through the contract, and Mum tried to calm and console Lucinda. I turned and walked away slowly, from the family that brought me nothing but pain. I entered the car and the dam broke. I cried. I have never cried so hard but I did today. All the pain and the hurt I had felt and held back just rushed back to me. A few minutes later, the car arrived at a compound. The gate was opened and I gasped at the sight. The Blackwood mansion was not your regular house. The neat garden, with lots of flowers, a water fountain, maids and guards moving about in their duty. The house was a big two-story building, which was wide and long. The house was painted a neutral color but it blended in so well with the environment. I was taking everything in as the car slowly pulled to a stop at the entrance of the house. A guard opened the door and I got down from the car as he led the way into the house. Once again I was gasping for breath, the interior was more beautiful than the exterior. In front of the stairs stood a man dressed in a black suit. “Good morning Mrs Blackwood” the man bowed as he greeted. I was taken aback, by the name he addressed me with and the way he greeted me—-everything felt new to me “Good morning, you can call me Evelyn, sir.” He nodded slightly “If you say so Mrs—- I Joe, the house butler and the one in charge of the staff. Do you want to be shown to your room or do you like a tour?” I was already exhausted and I wanted to try as much as possible to stay in my lane, “Please show me to my room.” Joe nodded and we began to walk up the stairs. The house had two wings—-the left and the right. The left-wing was where Adrian’s room was, so I would be staying in the right wing. I was happy about the arrangement as I wouldn’t be worried about running into him. “Miss, we would need to start the preparation for the wedding very soon. The venue and catering have been taken care of. Some sample of your gown will be sent tomorrow for you to make a decision.” Joe filled me in with the progress of the wedding preparation. “Is that all?” I asked him “Yes, Miss. Everything is set we just need your full cooperation.” He said to me as we finally got to a door that was located on the first floor. He pushed the door open and the room came into view. The room was painted white, the bed was a queen-sized bed that had white sheets spread on it. The room floor was decorated with a very beautiful marble floor. At the corner of the room was a beautiful living room set up. It had a fluffy rug and a center table which had a vase and flowers. The room had three doors—-one led to the balcony, one to the bathroom, and the last was a walking-in closet. The room was nothing but perfect. “I hope you like the setup, ma’am,” Joe asked with a smile and I nodded speechless. “Great! Your bags would be here any minute now. Dinner would be brought up and you can rest till when we have to go choose your wedding gown.” Joe concluded “Thank you…..” I said as I sat down on the black couch, feeling the softness of the rug under my feet. He gave me a bright smile “You are welcome, Evelyn. If you excuse me.” He said and walked out of the room leaving me to my thoughts. I chuckled knowing that this was the type of life Lucinda would go crazy for. I sat there for a while, taking in my new surroundings. The room was beautiful, but it felt empty. I felt like a prisoner in a beautiful cage. As I sat there, I heard a knock at the door. "Come in," I called out. The door opened, and a maid walked in with a tray of food. "Dinner, ma'am," she said with a curtsy. I nodded, and she set the tray down in front of me. I looked at the food, but I wasn't hungry. I was too busy thinking about my situation. As I sat there, I heard a noise coming from outside. I got up and walked over to the balcony. When I looked out, I saw Adrian standing in the garden, looking up at me. Our eyes met, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. He was handsome, but he was also cold and calculating. I didn't know what he wanted from me, but I knew I had to be careful. As I stood there, frozen in place, Adrian turned and walked away. I was left standing there, feeling confused and scared. What did he want from me? And why did I feel like I was trapped in a nightmare? As I stood there, trying to make sense of everything, I heard a voice behind me. "Ma'am, would you like me to clear the tray?" the maid asked. I turned to her and nodded. "Yes, please." As she cleared the tray, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was in grave danger. And I didn't know how to escape.
