Chapter 10

1120 Words
Evelyn's Pov. " Can you give me a moment alone, please?", My voice quivered. I was addressing everyone in the dressing room with me. Everyone fussing and fretting about increased my anxiety. "We'll excuse for a while, my dear ", Mrs Greene said ushering everyone out without even questioning me. Once I was alone I loosened the tight grip I had on my dress. I listened to the busy stir outside, sounds that were so close but felt distant. I felt detached like I was watching a movie and somehow I was still the main actress. The huge oak door of the dressing room separates me from the few humming and laughter outside. In the large mirror before me, I saw the reflection of a dazzling woman, clothed in the finest appearal, but inside I was falling apart, breaking into tiny pieces. I needed to breath, to clamp down on the need to scream and pull my hair. To stop the exaggerated congratulations and clear envy. My fingers trembled as I touched my face examining the expertly applied makeup, it was flawless, but my eyes, the makeup was still unable to conceal the pain, doubt and hurt that swirled freely in them. The door suddenly bursts open, allowing the chatters from outside to flow in freely. "Evelyn", Adrian's hard voice barked as he slammed the door fiercely behind him. I flinched turning to face him, but the deadly look in his eyes made me baffled and I fumbled with dress. "Spare me that treacherous look, where is your phone?", He demanded. I gasped frightened by the intensity of his anger that blew like hot air towards me. "W... what's going on?", I asked confused. "You're not dumb I asked for your phone and I'm not going to ask again", He raged. This was completely different from his usual cold and collected behaviour, I wondered what I done for him to direct the entire bulk of his anger on me. "Here have it", I dropped the phone into his eager hand, stepping away from him. He flipped through my phone like there was something he was patiently trying to find. His eyes darkened when he comes across something, and he waved the device to my face almost hitting me. It was the multiple texts sent by her father almost every day, each one asking for things Adrian was up to and where he was. "What update is your father asking for?", He barked angrily and I recoiled hot tears on the brink of falling. "I don't understand what he is up to as well, as you can see there's no reply from me ", I said. "I don't trust you at all, especially since you're the daughter of a renowned snake. How am I sure you don't have another means of communicating with him, telling him my secrets!! ", He flung my phone at the wall behind me, fuming as fisted his neat hair. "I swear Adrian, I would never betray you, I don't even know anything about you to tell. My father doesn't control me anymore especially now that I'm no longer under his roof", my words out choked underneath the tears that now flowed freely. "And you didn't think I should know this on time?", He said, his anger subsided a little as watches me. "Well you haven't made it easy for me to talk to you, have you?", I asked extremely pained beyond words. I really didn't need him adding salt to my injury. "That's bullshit, Evelyn. From now on I want to know everything that you and your shameless father talk about", he said. I winced at his harshness. "See you at the alter", he huffed walking away. I bit my lips holding back my sobs. ----- I stood at the entrance to the decorated gazebo behind Adrian's mansion, I must have been too distracted to notice when all this was put together. My breath was light and slow, the only sound I could hear clearly was that of my beating heart, I felt like I was trapped in a dream as everything seemed to fade in the background. The aisle stretched before me, leading to Adrian, I was stepping into a new chapter of my life, that had already been written for me by someone else. There was no one by my side to walk me down the aisle, and though I tried to ignore it I was slightly hurt. I prayed that the distance between us wouldn't end as I locked eyes with him. My heart ached and I could still feel the rawness of my tears on my cheeks. No amount of powder applied to conceal my tears could hide the sorrow in my eyes. Taking a deep breath, I lifted my chin before hurrying to meet him, the few people seated started chuckling, amused. Probably thinking I was in a haste to be joined to this man before me, I simply wanted this done before I could think of changing my mind. This was my miserable fate. I stood beside him and our eyes meets again, I was determined to not look away this time. I would never break in front of him again. As the priest spoke gently, I made a vow in heart, no matter how cold and arrogant he was, I am ready for whatever storm blew my way from now on. "Yes,I do", He said. Those words rang in my head repeatedly as he slipped the cold ring into my finger. "I do", I replied shoving the ring into his finger before dropping his hand quickly like it burned. When his head dipped down and he placed his rigid hands behind my head and waist pulling me slowly until I was pressed to his front, my senses blurred momentarily. His lips brushed mine sensually for a second or two before he straightened and stepped aside. The claps from everyone presents cleared my clouded thoughts immediately, and I plaster a smile on my face. There's only one person I recognize among the crowd and that's Victoria, who looked like she was about to explode as she watched me with her hate filled eyes. I'm pulled by Adrian to his side, and he laces his fingers with mine, kissing my hair as camera lights from various directions kept flashing at us. "Keep smiling, Evelyn we almost done", he whispered into my ear. To everyone it looked like a playful kiss but I felt bold and returned the gesture. " Why rush, husband?. I am enjoying the show", I whispered as well stretching to pull his earlobe between my lips. He stiffened, his fingers squeezing mine as he groaned into my ears.
