Evelyn's Pov.
Adrian had left hastily shortly after demanding that I cut off communications with my father, whether he noticed my reaction to the news on TV or he had ulterior motives was unknown to me, I wasn't in need the mood to argue, I felt drained both physically and emotionally.
As I walked back to my room, I couldn't hear the murmurs from the news again, and I was grateful for that.
The door the my room closes softly as I lept to the bedside drawer to get my phone.
There's a message on the screen and I frowned as it was a message from my father, I could not make out what the content was yet, but Adrian's words weighed heavily in my heart.
A light tap on my door draws my attention and I quickly placed my phone on the bed, I cleared my throat quietly before opening the door.
By simply looking at her I could tell the person before me was Mrs Greene - the household staff Adrian said I'll be seeing today.
She had a beautiful smile that complimented her small posture and somehow made me feel comfortable instantly.
"Mrs Blackwood", she nodded curtly.
My smile flowed easily matching hers. "It's Evelyn. I would like you to call me Evelyn."
"Alright, dear. Adrian asked me to invite a stylist to get your dress fitted. I've been on leave for a month that's why I wasn't around to welcome you".
"I am aware".
"Brilliant. Let's head to your dressing room then", She said closing my room door behind me.
"Dressing room?", I asked as both fell into steps, stopping in front of a room two doors down the hallway.
"Oh dear", she chuckled opening the door as she guided me into a gigantic room.
"You're married to one of the most important man in New York. You definitely need a glamorous dressing room to match your status", She whispered like she was only sharing an important secret.
I nodded absently, my eyes moving to the window as the sun shone brightly at its peak, the gardens outside shimmering colourfully under the sun.
I wanted to feel excited, but whenever I thought of this marriage as the business transaction it really was, I felt empty, devoid of emotions.
"This is Vivian, your stylist", Mrs Greene said gesturing at the slender woman who had her fingers moving swiftly around a dress worn on a mannequin. The white dress glittered attractively, I wondered if I'll be able to don this dress perfectly.
"Ohh... Your figure. Is she the bride?", Vivian asked watching me with awe clearly shown in her eyes.
"Yes, Vivian. This is the latest bride in town, Mrs Evelyn Blackwood," Mrs Greene said jokingly making me laugh.
"Don't listen to her. Yes I'm the bride, but please just call me Evelyn", I said.
"That's okay", Vivian smirked. Her fully ringed fingers glittered as she flipped them through her permed hair.
"Are you ready to try your dress?", She asked.
"Do I have a choice?", I shrugged ignoring Vivian confused smile and watching briefly as Mrs Greene gives me a knowing smile, like a mother would give her child in encouragement. It's not like my mother's here to share this moment with me. She's probably busy going on shopping sprees with Lucinda, spending the money the money I was sold off into marriage to pay.
Few minutes later, I stood watching my reflection in front of the full length mirror, my fingers trembled as I brushed them across the small shiny stones I know were diamonds on my wedding dress.
The dress was captivating, a beautiful mix of lace, silk and satin. The chest was a daring low cut and it displayed a generous amount cleavage, my wide hips flared sexily, and for a while I forgot my present ordeal and focused on how confident I felt.
The dress was perfect, but I wouldn't point out how uncomfortable I felt about the plunging neckline, as that was Vivian's most proudest achievement about this dress.
"Mrs Greene", Adrian firm voice filled the room and I stiffened keeping my stiff back to face him, while I focused deeply on the mirror in front of me.
"Adrian", They hugged briefly. I watched them through the mirror. I prayed he wouldn't even notice me.
" Evelyn's so beautiful and polite", She said.
Instead of answering he nodded, keeping his heated gaze on me, my heart fluttered in a way that made me shiver. Why was he looking at me like I was pleasurable, was this also part of keeping up appearances for the public?.
"Look at her, she's so shy", Mrs Greene gushed. My face flushed and I desperately needed her to take the attention away from me.
"I'll see you later, I'll be in my study", He said taking his heated gaze from me before leaving the room. I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
After several hours, I was back in my room when my phone rings.
My heart skipped a beat when I was my father's name on the screen. He had not called to check on me since I left home. Adrian was right when he called him my 'uncaring father '.
I swiped the screen, my fingers trembling as the call connected.
"Evelyn", His said.
"Yes, father", I answered.
"Where are you?", His harsh breath filled my ears.
"In my room, where else would I be". I knew he didn't care so why was he asking.
"Get that sass away from your voice when you're speaking to me. I need you to be useful to me once again". He said.
There is pause from his side and I felt wary and anxious listening to his voice. I followed my instinct and pressed the call recorder option, waiting for him to speak again.
"I'll be needing daily updates about Adrian's whereabouts and some documents".
"I can't do that! ".
"Sort that out Evelyn, you're his wife", with that he ended the call.
What was my father up to?.
