--- CHAPTER 4: YES, I LOVE HER Sandra stood at the doorway, her sunglasses perched on her head, her hand firmly on her waist. "Who is this beggar in my boyfriend's house? Chioma, have you started bringing beggars into this house? Do you think this is your village?" she barked. Chioma stood up instantly. "Sandra, she is not a beggar. She is my friend." Amaka also stood up, her voice shaking with anger. "Madam, I am not a beggar. I came to visit my friend. Is this your house?" Sandra laughed sarcastically. "Your friend? A debt maid now has a friend? Look at you two — village girls gossiping in my boyfriend's parlor." Amaka wanted to reply, but Chioma held her hand. "Please, Amaka, leave it." "No! I will not leave it!" Chioma shouted. "This woman insulted me the first day I came here and made me pound yam with an injury. Now she is calling my friend a beggar?" Sandra stepped closer, her eyes full of hate. "Yes, you are both beggars. And you, Chioma, do you think wearing new clothes makes you a madam? You are still a debt maid. Once your father's debt is paid, Jason will throw you out!" Chioma laughed silently. Sandra frowned. "Why did you laugh?" "Because you don't behave like the classy lady you claim to be. You are busy dragging and fighting for a man. Are you not ashamed? You may call me a debt maid, but I am not dumb like you." Sandra dropped her bag on the chair, ready to fight. "Did you just indirectly insult me?" She raised her hand to slap Chioma. In a swift move, Chioma grabbed her hand mid-air and held it down. "You don't know me ooo, I de crazy ooo," Chioma said, her eyes burning. Sandra was shocked and defeated. She never expected Chioma to fight back. At that moment, the main gate opened. Jason's car drove in. He was back from work early. He entered the house and saw the scene — Sandra fuming with anger, Chioma standing face-to-face with her, and Amaka sitting nervously. "What is going on here?" Jason asked, his voice deep. Sandra ran to him. "Babe, thank God you are back. I told you this girl is bad. She brought her friend to gossip about us and fight me." Jason gently removed Sandra's hand from his waist and turned to Chioma. "Chioma, what happened?" Chioma told him everything. Jason turned to Sandra, visibly angry. "Why did you have to insult her friend?" "Because I don't like beggars around my house. And why did you buy clothes for this debt maid?" Sandra snapped. "She is not just a debt maid. She is under my care and this is my house. You have no right to insult anyone here. And don't call her a debt maid. Her name is Chioma." He then turned to Amaka. "Please, don't be annoyed by her rude character." He looked at Chioma. "Have you offered your friend anything to eat?" "No, sir," Chioma replied. "Please, get her something to eat." Sandra and Jason went upstairs. Upstairs, Sandra was pacing up and down the room. "Why will I be treated like a guest in my own man's house? No, something must be done." Jason entered. She didn't even let him drop his bag. "What was the meaning of what you just did downstairs? You were supposed to defend me, but you were supporting that useless maid!" "Don't you dare call her that," Jason cut in. "We address people by their names, not their status. Mind the way you talk to people. It will help you one day." The next day, Jason was at a hotel lounge having drinks with his friend Chuks. "Guy, how far na?" Chuks asked. "My brother, everything is not just okay," Jason sighed. "How?" "My girlfriend and the maid. Sandra is always giving me headache, always looking for problem." Jason narrated everything. Chuks smiled. "But do you love Chioma?" "Nooo! Why would you say a thing like that? How can I settle for my debt maid?" Jason shouted, trying to hide his feelings. "Hmm, guy, shine your eye ooo," Chuks teased. "Can we talk about work?" Jason quickly changed the topic. That afternoon, Jason returned home and sat in the parlor watching TV. Chioma was in her room. Sandra came downstairs and walked straight to him. "Jason, we need to talk." Jason turned off the TV. "What do you want us to talk about?" "Jason, I'm hurting. From the day I came back from my trip, I've seen how you treat your debt maid..." "I have warned you several times to stop calling her a debt maid!" Jason yelled. "Are you seeing what I'm saying? Always supporting her. You care for her more than you do for me. I saw you both holding hands, taking a stroll. You don't do that for me. You bought her clothes, you do everything for her..." "Sandra, can you just stop yelling? You are making everyone hear us." "I'm not calming down, Jason. You are hurting me. What do you want me to do? Fire her? Send her out? I want her out of this house this minute!" "I'm not sending her out." "Do you love her?" Sandra said, tears rolling down her eyes. "How can you ask me..." "I ask again. Do you love her?" Silence filled the parlor. Jason's heart was beating fast. "Yes, Sandra. Yes, I love her, if that is what you want to hear!" Sandra froze. "Fine. Thank you for loving her," she said, crying, and walked out. Jason sat down, staring at nothing. How did those words come out of his mouth? Meanwhile, Chioma heard everything from her room. She was shocked to her bones. She rushed to the window and saw Sandra packing her traveling box into her car and driving out at full speed. Her hands were shaking. Chioma sat on her bed, her heart beating fast. She heard Jason say with her own ears, "Yes, Sandra, I love her." "Did he really mean me?" she whispered. "No, it cannot be. He is just angry at Sandra. I am just a debt maid. I cannot cause problem in his house." She did not pack any bag. She did not run away. She sat there, confused, staring at the door, waiting to hear what Jason would do next. Downstairs, Jason was still sitting on the chair, his head in his hands. He whispered to himself, "What have I just said?" A knock came on Chioma's door. "Chioma, can I come in?" It was Jason's voice. Chioma's heart jumped. Should she open the door?
