Chapter 7 Farewell to a LadyThe carriage ride to the house now occupied by the Freiherr and his family took Petroc a little out of the centre of the city. Situated in a quiet and obviously prosperous area on the outskirts of the city, it had a pleasing façade. Like the rest of the city, it had an air of quiet dignity, and he was struck, yet again, by how well maintained the streets and the buildings were. The carriage drew to a standstill and he handed the coachman the agreed fare with a small gratuity as well, and then he mounted the steps to tug the bell pull beside the door.
