“Where are we going, Benji?” Rose asked from the backseat, her small hands fidgeting with a tiny car figurine she had gotten from Jacob the night before. She turned it over between her fingers, the wheels spinning idly as she played with it absentmindedly. “It’s a surprise, Rosie girl,” Benjamin answered, his voice filled with quiet amusement as he kept his eyes focused on the road. I glanced at him, searching for any kind of hint in his expression, but he remained frustratingly unreadable. I was just as curious and excited as Rose, but after asking him three separate times on the way to pick her up, I had finally given up on getting him to reveal anything. Benjamin was stubborn when it came to surprises. There was no prying information out of him when he was determined to keep a secret.
