"WHAT?!" Arianne's voice echoed in the halls of the museum. The people visiting the place couldn't help but look in their direction.
Aela's eyes send a warning glare to her friend. "Arianne!" she shouted in a whisper. She tugged her arm and pulled her towards the backroom of the museum.
"This happened last week and you're telling me about it just now?" her friend reacted with an unbelievable expression. "What kind of friend are you?"
"Don't be dramatic. Besides, I was too focused on the divorce and my daughter so I don't have the time to inform you," Aela defended herself. "It's better late than never, right?"
Arianne just took a deep sigh before looking at her best friend again. "What are you going to do now? You got nothing, even a penny, from your marriage. He claimed your properties and the company you inherited is under his control."
Aela sat down on the couch while massaging her temple. "I don't really know. A part of me wanted to claim everything back, but another part of me is saying to just let it go and move forward," she answered before resting her back on the couch.
"The thing that's holding me back on fighting is my daughter's safety. She will be stuck between us. Besides, Ignacio has more influence than me," she added before gritting her teeth as she remembered what happened in the court.
"I'm sure that he paid the judge," Arianne spoke while rolling her eyes. "Your evidence was obviously stronger than what he presented. No judge who is in the right mind will choose a cheating man over an abused woman. Unless they're dumb, or paid."
"Even my lawyer couldn't believe what happened. Imagine the chaos inside the trial court when the result was announced," Aela opened her phone to look at the wallpaper that contains the picture of her precious daughter.
"I just want to give Ania a good life. I don't care about the others," she added.
Arianne sat beside her before her left arm rested on her best friend's shoulder. "Don't worry. You have me. Your grandma is also here to support you and Ania," she comforted her while slowly tapping her skin. "When the time comes when you want to take everything back, I'll be supporting you."
"Thank you, Arianne," Aela smiled sweetly at her. "You're so sweet. I wanna kiss you."
She leaned forward while puckering her lips, which was immediately dodged by Arianne.
"No! Yuck! Go away!" she screamed before running back to the museum lobby, leaving the laughing Aela behind.
MONTHS PASSED and Aela forgot about the unfortunate happenings in her life. Instead, she gave her full attention to her daughter.
She doesn't have any updates about Ignacio and his mistress. She doesn't even know the situation of the weapons company she owned before. Her whole days, weeks, and months were dedicated to her daughter.
Aela made sure to give Ania the affection and quality time that she needed for every day. Fortunately, her daughter already understands that her father won't be with them anymore. She seemed unaffected by what happened.
"Okay, mamma. What's important is that we're together," those were the words Ania always says to her whenever they have a small talk about the family.
There were times they would see a complete family, and Aela was worried that her daughter might feel that she was missing something. However, it turns out that her daughter thinks more mature than her.
"We're a complete family, mamma. I'm the baby, you are the mamma and pappa," Ania spoke in a cute little voice while holding her favorite penguin toy.
The days were bearable because of her child, and it became easier because of the support of her grandmother and Arianne.
"You call for me, nonna?" Aela asked while taking a peek inside her grandma's bedroom.
Amelia is sitting in front of her vanity while brushing her short white hair. She looked at the mirror in front of her that also showed her granddaughter. "Come in. I have something to show you," she spoke.
Aela hurriedly walked inside before closing the door. She stood on the right side of her grandma while looking at the vanity.
"What's that, nonna?" she asked while pointing at the black chest box resting on the vanity. It looks so old but the lock of it is still in gold color.
"This is what I want to give to you," Amelia answered before lifting the chest box and giving it to her granddaughter. "It has something you can use in the future. You can you use it to have everything back in place. Once I'm gone, open it and use it when you're ready."
Aela was confused while looking down at the chest box. She was curious about what was inside of it. She wanted to take a peek, but her grandma had a wish.
"I'm sure it will take a long time before I can open this," Aela spoke before smiling at Amelia. She caressed the rough parts of the box before hitting it gently with her fingers, creating a crisp sound of wood.
"How do you say so?" Amelia asked.
"Because you still have many years left," she answered.
Amelia smiled and hugged her granddaughter while sitting down. "I hope so. I still want to be with you for a long time. I want to watch Ania grow up to be a fine young lady."
"I will do everything to make sure my daughter will have a bright future, nonna," Aela answered as she hugged the old woman back. "I want her to grow healthy and happy."
However, Aela's wishes for her daughter were put on the brink of failure when she found her daughter having a high fever after school. She immediately called for a nurse to check her daughter's situation.
"It's only a normal fever, madam," the nurse spoke after checking Ania's body. "Just make her take this medicine and she will be fine after a day or two."
Aela followed the nurse's suggestions. She gave her daughter fruits that can make her immune system stronger. She didn't fail to give the medicine and always made sure that Ania would eat and sleep on time.
However, just after two days, the deterioration of Ania's health became evident. Her fever is still high, and now, it is paired with intense coughing.
Aela and Amelia decide to take the child to the hospital, fearing that what's happening to Ania is not just a simple fever.
Various tests were conducted on Ania, who is now much skinnier than before. She kept on coughing, but no phlegm could be removed from her. Her fever also stayed between 39-40 degrees Celsius.
"It's just a normal fever," the doctor of the private hospital spoke. "She can stay here for a few days so that we can monitor her health."
They followed the doctor's words. However, after just a day, Ania began coughing so much that she coughed a red liquid.
"Blood..." Aela mutterrd while looking at the phlegm on her handkerchief. "Blood! Help! We need a doctor!"
She kept on shouting while checking her daughter, who couldn't stop coughing. "Ania, do you feel hurt? What's happening to you?"
Ania couldn't answer her mother because of the continuous coughing with blood. When the doctor arrived, they hurriedly tried to stabilize the situation and waited until Ania stopped coughing.
"Mamma..." Ania called for her mother while reaching for her using her small arms.
"Mamma's here. You'll be fine, baby. The doctor will treat you, okay?" she comforted her daughter as she kissed her forehead.
Another doctor entered the room and spoke to Aela. "We have to run some tests on your child. I'm suspecting an infection in her lungs. We just need your permission so that we can proceed with the test," she spoke.
Aela immediately agreed. Later on, a nurse arrived and retrieved a sample of Ania's blood for testing. They were informed that the result would be out after a day or two.
"Nonna," Aela cried to her grandma while Ania was asleep. "I don't know what's happening. She was healthy then suddenly this happened."
Aela covered her face with her palms and cried loudly. The sight of her daughter coughing up blood was ingrained in her mind. Her body can't help but shiver.
"Let's pray that Ania will be alright, okay?" Amelia comforted her granddaughter even if she was also shaking inside. She didn't witness what happened, but just looking at how thin her great-granddaughter was enough to make her nervous.
"I'm scared, Nonna," Aela's hand trembles while touching her grandma's hands. "What if my child has a disease? I can't take it, nonna. I'm afraid of what the doctors will find out."
"Mykhaela," Amelia softened her voice. "I understand your fear, but your daughter needs you. You have to be strong for her, okay?"
Aela nodded before calming herself. Suddenly, Ania's voice echoed in the room, calling for her mother.
"Ania?" Aela spoke before sitting near her daughter. "Do you want anything? Are you hungry? Mamma will make some food for you. Just tell me."
"Mamma, I want a penguin," Ania spoke in her weak voice.
Amelia hurriedly grabbed the stuffed toy from her bag and gave it to Ania. The child reached for it using her weak hands before hugging it as tight as her body could.
"I feel cold, mamma," Ania complained as she moved her head closer to her mother's arms.
"It means your body is fighting germs, mi figlia," Aela answered while putting the blanket over Ania's body. "Tell me if you need more blankets, okay?"
Ania nodded before looking up at her mother. "Hug me, mamma. I want hugs," she spoke before letting go of the penguin toy to reach for her mother.
Aela immediately gave in to her request. She felt Ania's hot body on her skin as soon as they hugged each other. It felt uncomfortable but homey at the same time.
She kissed her child's forehead. "Mamma will do everything so that you'll be healthy again, okay?" she said while planting more kisses on her face.
"Nonna will look for the best doctors so that they can treat you," Amelia added before sitting down on the other side of Ania. "We will still go to the penguin aquarium, right?"
Ania's eyes lit up. "Penguin!" she exclaimed happily as if she didn't have a fever and cough. "I want to visit many penguins!"
"That's right," Aela answered. "Once you're treated, we will visit many penguins. You can play with them, or even feed them. Do you like that?"
"Yes! Play with penguins!" she sang with her cute voice while swaying her upper body and wiggling on the bed. "I will be healthy again and I will play with penguins!"
They were hopeful that Ania didn't have any disease and that she just had a simple cough and fever. However, their hopes were shattered when the result came in after two days.
"Your daughter has active tuberculosis, madam. We have to check you and your family, as well as the other people she had contact with to check if they are also infected," the doctor explained before giving them the paper that contains the test results.
"We will have to isolate your daughter until her situation is already stabilized," he added.
Aela tried so hard not to cry. She was so careful of her daughter. Everything around her is cleaned thoroughly, and she doesn't know where her daughter could possibly got the disease.
"I'll be fine, Mamma," Ania comforted her with her little fingers. "I will take the medicines and I'll be healthy again. We will still visit many penguins remember?"
Aela's worries lessened. Her daughter is so strong, even comforting her even if she's the one that's hurting physically. Aela knew she had to be strong, because she had a daughter that needs her more than anything.
