879 Words
Over the next four years, Roxxane poured her heart and soul into raising her son, whom she named Murphy. She cherished every moment with him, but the mystery of Alex's death continued to haunt her. Roxxane couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. She remembered that four years ago, they hadn't found a body, and that tiny glimmer of hope kept burning in her heart, whispering that maybe, just maybe, Alex was still out there somewhere. Murphy was a bright and lively child, inheriting his father's captivating green eyes and his mother's determination. Murphy was a constant source of joy and wonder in Roxxane's life. His infectious laughter filled their home, and his bright eyes mirrored Alex's in a way that both comforted and troubled her. Their days were filled with laughter, adventures, and countless bedtime stories. Roxxane made sure that Murphy's childhood was as normal as possible. Every day, as she watched her son grow, she couldn't help but wonder if Alex was out there, watching over them, unable to come back yet. As a single mother, Roxxane juggled her job as a nurse with the demands of parenthood. It was a delicate balancing act, but she was determined to provide for Murphy while also being there for him as he grew up. She wanted to instill in him the same sense of adventure and resilience that had defined his father, even though they'd never met. One evening, as Roxxane tucked Murphy into bed, he gazed up at her with those familiar green eyes and asked, "Mom, do you ever think about Dad?" Roxxane smiled, her heart both heavy and full at the mention of Alex. "All the time, sweetheart." Murphy's brow furrowed as he pressed further, "Why can't I meet him, Mom? Where is he?" Roxxane hesitated, her mind grappling with the complexities of how to explain this to her young son. Finally, she replied gently, "You see, Murphy, sometimes life throws us unexpected challenges. Your dad... he faced one of those challenges, and we haven't been able to find him yet. But we haven't given up hope." In her mind she feels sorry about lying to her son about his father, but a part of her is telling her that what she did was right because maybe, just maybe Alex is still out there, somewhere, waiting for the right time to approach. Murphy's eyes filled with curiosity and a hint of sadness. "So, he's still out there somewhere?" Roxxane nodded, her voice soft and reassuring. "Yes, Murphy, that's what I believe. And no matter what, you carry a part of him in your heart, and he will be so proud of the amazing person you're becoming." "Mom, can you tell me more about Dad? I want to know what he was like." Roxxane sighed, feeling the weight of her past press upon her. She wrapped her arms around Murphy, pulling him close. "Your dad, Alex, was a remarkable man. He was kind, intelligent, and incredibly loving. He had a smile that could light up a room and a heart that was as big as the ocean. He also loved adventures and exploring new places." Murphy's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Did he have any favorite stories or places he liked to go?" Roxxane nodded, a faint smile on her lips. "Yes, he did. He loved telling stories about his travels, especially the time he went hiking in the Rocky Mountains. He used to say that standing at the summit made him feel like he was on top of the world." Murphy's imagination ran wild as he listened to his mother's words. "Wow, Mom, that sounds amazing. I wish I could have gone on adventures with him." Roxxane's heart ached for her son's longing to know his father better. She held him tighter, promising, "I wish that too, baby. But you have a piece of him in you, and I'll make sure you grow up to be as kind and adventurous as he was." now, enough with the questions son, it's time for you to sleep okay, you still need to wake up early tomorrow for your school, got it baby?" "Yes mommy, goodnight". Murphy kissed goodnight to his mom before closing his eyes. Roxxane smiled and gently tucked Murphy in, planting a soft kiss on his forehead. "Goodnight, my little adventurer. Sweet dreams." As she left his room, Roxxane couldn't help but think about the journey she and Alex were on together. The night was quiet as she returned to the living room, where a stack of documents lay scattered across the table and her laptop. She poured herself a cup of tea and scrolled through her f*******:. She was busy scrolling when one particular news caught her attention. She couldn't believe her eyes, not sure if this was true or not. But she couldn't be wrong, she knew what she was seeing. Those eyes, those lips, Roxxane's heart raced as she stared at the screen, her eyes fixed on the image before her. The face in the photograph was hauntingly familiar, like a ghost from the past come back to life. It was a face she had known better than her own, a face she had loved with all her heart—it was Alex.
