THE SECOND CHANCE LECTURE Chapter 7: "Two Pink Lines" 9:00am. Kang Apartment. Bathroom. Soo-jin was staring at the pregnancy test in her hand. One line. Wait. Two lines. Pink. Bright. Clear. Her hands started shaking. "Positive," she whispered. Her phone slipped from her pocket and clattered to the floor. UNNIE WHERE ARE YOU??? DRESS FITTING IN 30 MIN!!! It was Eun-ji. Soo-jin couldn't breathe. Pregnant. She was pregnant. In her past life she never got this chance. She died before she could. The door opened. Ethan walked in. He stopped when he saw her face. Healthy." Ethan held Soo-jin's hand the entire time. When they heard the heartbeat. thump thump thump Both of them cried. In the car after, Ethan was silent. "Say something," Soo-jin said. He pulled over. Turned to her. "I’m terrified," he said honestly. "What if I’m a bad dad? What if I’m cold like my father?" Soo-jin cupped his face. "You’re not. You’re the man who made porridge. Who stayed up 3 nights. Who proposed on TV. You’ll be the best dad." He kissed her. Soft. "We can’t tell anyone yet. Not until 12 weeks." She nodded. --- That Night. Calling Family. Ethan: "Mother. We have news." Madam Kang: "What is it?" Ethan looked at Soo-jin. "We’re pregnant." Silence. Then screaming. "OH MY GOD JI-HOON!!! I’M GOING TO BE A GRANDMOTHER!!!" Madam Kang showed up at their apartment 20 minutes later. With soup. And vitamins. And baby clothes. "Absolutely no stress," she ordered. "No work. No wedding planning. I will handle it." Soo-jin and Ethan looked at each other and laughed. --- 2 Weeks Later. 8 Weeks Pregnant. Morning sickness hit hard. Soo-jin was throwing up in the bathroom when Ethan ran in. "I’m here," he said. Held her hair. Rubbed her back. After, he made ginger tea. "You’re taking leave from work," he said. "Ethan—" "Non-negotiable," he cut her off. "The baby and you come first." She pouted. "But the drug trial—" "I’ll handle it," he said. "My wife and child are more important than any drug." She melted. --- 12 Weeks. Ultrasound Day. The room was dark. The technician moved the wand. And there it was. A little bean. With arms and legs. And a flickering heartbeat. "A girl or boy?" Soo-jin asked. "Too early to tell," the doctor said. "But healthy." Ethan was recording on his phone. Crying. Openly crying. After, he posted it to his private account. Caption: My whole world. --- 4 Months. Wedding + Baby Shower Combo. Madam Kang planned everything. White flowers. Fairy lights. 100 guests. Soo-jin in a white maternity dress. Ethan in a black suit. They exchanged vows. Again. For real. "I promise to love you," Ethan said. "In public. In private. As your husband. As the father of our child." Soo-jin cried. "I promise to choose you. Every life. Every time." They kissed. The crowd cheered. Then Madam Kang brought out a cake. Inside: blue and pink confetti. "It’s a..." she paused. "OPEN IT!" Ethan cut the cake. Blue confetti exploded. "A boy," everyone shouted. Ethan looked at Soo-jin. "A son." She nodded, crying. "Our son." Ethan pulled her close. "Ji-hoon Junior?" Soo-jin laughed. "Absolutely not." --- 7 Months. Nesting Mode. The nursery was finished. Blue walls. Crib. Tiny suits. Ethan was assembling the crib at 2am. Soo-jin watched from the door. "You don’t have to—" "I want to," he said. "For him." He looked up. "What should we name him?" Soo-jin thought. "Kang Seo-woo. Means 'auspicious rain'. Because he came after the storm." Ethan smiled. "Kang Seo-woo. I like it." --- 8.5 Months. Labor. 2am. Soo-jin's water broke. Ethan was dressed and in the car in 4 minutes. At the hospital, he didn’t leave her side. Held her hand. Wiped her sweat. 14 hours later. "Cry, baby," the nurse said. Waaaaaah Ethan cut the cord. And there he was. Kang Seo-woo. 8 pounds. Screaming. Perfect. Ethan held him first. "Hey, buddy," he whispered. "I’m your dad." Soo-jin was exhausted but smiling. "Let me see him." Ethan placed Seo-woo on her chest. The three of them. Finally. --- 1 Week Later. Home. 3am feeding. Ethan was up. Changing diapers. Making bottles. Soo-jin watched him. Tired but happy. "You’re good at this," she said. Ethan looked up from the bottle. "I had 3 years to practice. In my head." She smiled. "Come here." He sat next to her on the bed. Baby between them. "This is better than any award," he said. "Better than Seoul Tower?" she teased.
