Chapter 7The streets of Govanhill consisted of vast Victorian terraces of tenement buildings and these constructions were built of the sandstone that Glasgow is famous for. Many areas of the city had tenements and in some locations, like Muirend and Shawlands, the apartments had become desirable first homes for young, high flyers and children of the rich, but not Govanhill. The hotch-potch of incomers which included economic immigrants, both legal and illegal, together with many Housing Benefit tenants who'd never worked and didn't ever intend to, diluted the quality of life in the area. Throw in a quantity of d**g pushers, alcoholics and prostitutes and the area was lost. Although Govanhill had well constructed housing, decent people were moving away.
