Kaynim’s POV
I walk down the hallway toward the conference room, my footsteps echoing against the stone floor. Nikolaj and Alpha Reed had asked where Tazzym was, noticing his absence and the fact that he’d blocked his mind-link so no one could get through. I’d volunteered to check on him, though I had a sneaking suspicion of what I might find.
As I approach the door, I hear some muffled sounds and raise an eyebrow, my curiosity piqued. With a sigh, I push the door open, already guessing what I’m about to walk in on.
And I’m right.
Tazzym is f*****g Namaari hard and she lets out a loud scream as she orgasms. Tazzym rests his forehead against hers, a smug grin spreading across his face as he turns to me. “Hey, brother,” Tazzym drawls, his voice thick with amusement. “What’s up?”
I can’t help but roll my eyes. “Not again,” I grumble, crossing my arms over my chest. I’m used to Tazzym’s antics by now, but this is pushing it. “Really, here, in the conference room, while her brother is just a couple of rooms away?”
Tazzym doesn’t miss a beat. “You can always join us, brother,” he teases, still holding Namaari close. “I think Namaari has some energy left to spare.”
Namaari swats him playfully, a blush spreading across her cheeks as she slides off the table. Tazzym helps her down, his hands lingering on her waist, while she smooths out her dress, straightening the fabric with a huff.
As Namaari passes by me, she playfully bumps her shoulder against mine, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she looks up at me. I’m still standing there with my arms crossed, trying to keep a stern expression. “You sure know how to pick your moments to walk into a room,” she teases, a sly grin on her face. Then, leaning in close, she whispers, “Or is that your guilty pleasure, just watching?”
My arms drop to my sides as I stutter, caught completely off guard. “I… I wasn’t… I mean, that’s not—”
Tazzym bursts into laughter, his voice filling the room. I shoot him a glare, trying to keep my composure. “This isn’t funny,” I say, my tone firm. “What if someone else had walked in? Nikolaj, for example.”
Tazzym grins, entirely unfazed. “Then he would’ve gotten quite the show,” he replies, his voice laced with amusement.
I growl in frustration, my patience wearing thin. “Little brother, you—”
Before I can finish, Namaari places a hand on my chest, and I immediately feel a strange calm wash over me, even though I won’t admit it. “Everything’s fine, nothing happened. Calm down, Alpha Kaynim,” she says soothingly.
I sigh heavily, still trying to keep up the stern act, but I can’t help but look down at her with a softer expression. “Princess, not everything is fine. You smell completely like Tazzym.”
Namaari gives me a small smile and replies, “I’ll go take a shower; problem solved. Enjoy your boys’ night.” She steps out of the conference room, leaving me standing there, running a hand through my hair in frustration.
Just as I think the moment is over, I hear her voice again. “By the way…” I look toward the doorway, and she’s peeking her head back in with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Should I leave the bathroom door open so you don’t have to storm in? Maybe I should set up a chair for you to watch… Though honestly, you could use a shower too.” She winks at me and disappears down the hall.
My mouth falls open, and I murmur to myself, “Does she really mean what she just…?” Before I can finish the thought, I hear her giggling from down the hall.
Tazzym comes up beside me, still chuckling. “Bro, she’s got you wrapped around her finger. When are you going to admit that?”
I huff, trying to hide the grin that threatens to break across my face. “That girl is going to be my downfall.”
Tazzym heads out of the conference room as well, but he looks back over his shoulder with a smirk. “But it’ll be a sweet, delicious downfall.” He laughs as he walks down the hallway to his own bathroom to wash the smell of Namaari off him.
I grumble again, shaking my head. “I’ve got my hands full with my brothers, and now a sassy mate on top of it. Goddess, help me.”
Namaari’s POV
I sit alone at the breakfast table, my fingers idly tracing patterns on the tablecloth as I wait for the triplets. It's still early, 7am, I’ve just said my goodbyes to Nikolaj, who’s headed back to the Moonstone pack. I miss him already, but there’s no time to dwell on that. The Duneshadow pack attack is coming, and there’s so much to prepare for.
Zephyr sits beside me on the table, nibbling on pieces of fruit from the spread. I can’t help but smile at the sight of my mischievous little companion sneaking bites of our breakfast. “We have to wait for the triplets,” I chuckle softly, reaching out to give Zephyr a scratch behind his ear. “Or Kaynim will have my head again.”
Zephyr pauses in his munching to look at me, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “Secretly, you like it when he gets all bossy with you.”
I roll my eyes, though I can’t help but laugh at his teasing. “I do not.”
Zephyr grins, a playful glint in his eye. “Sure, sure, whatever you say.”
I shake my head, standing up from the table. “I’m going to go find them. Nikolaj said they were in the conference room before he left. I wonder what they’re discussing so early in the morning. We’re supposed to go over the strategy for the Duneshadow pack attack together with the other packs later.”
Making my way down the hallway, I head toward the conference room. The door is slightly ajar, and I slow down, a strange feeling prickling at the back of my mind. I lean closer, careful to keep quiet as I listen in on the conversation inside.
I hear Zyméo’s voice first, his tone serious. “Ezekiel’s scout group hasn’t reported back. They’ve missed their last two update windows.”
Tazzym speaks up next, his voice tinged with concern. “We sent Beta River and some warriors last night to find them. No word yet.”
My heart skips a beat. Ezekiel? Why wasn’t I told about this?
“Don’t say anything to Namaari,” Zyméo says firmly. “Ezekiel is dear to her. If she finds out, she’ll be furious because we sent him. She’ll never forgive us for putting him in danger.”
I feel my blood start to boil. How could they keep this from me? And Ezekiel, out there somewhere, maybe in danger…
Kaynim’s voice is calm but defensive. “We sent Ezekiel because he’s our best scout. We didn’t do anything wrong. He was the logical choice for the mission.”
Zyméo sighs. “We know that, but Namaari won’t see it that way.”
“And Kaynim,” Tazzym’s voice takes on a teasing note, “you’re going to bear the brunt of Namaari’s anger.”
I grit my teeth, anger flaring in my chest. How dare they? They’re hiding things from me. Things that involve someone I care about.
“We have to wait for Beta River,” Zyméo continues, his tone steady. “We can’t move forward with the attack on the Duneshadow pack until he’s back. He needs to be here to protect our pack while we’re gone. If he hasn’t found Ezekiel and the others... well, let’s hope he has. But if not, we’ll search for them ourselves after the attack. It might even bring us closer to finding out what happened to our father and the others who disappeared.”
I’ve heard enough. I turn quickly, my heart racing as I head down the hall toward my room. Zephyr, scurries after me, sensing my urgency. “What are you planning to do?” he squeaks.
I don’t answer him. My mind is already racing, formulating a plan. I can’t just sit here and wait. I have to do something.
I pull out my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I dial Willow’s number. The call barely rings twice before she picks up. “Namaari? What’s going on?” Willow’s voice is thick with concern, and I can hear the worry in her tone.
“Do you know where your brother River went last night?” I ask, getting straight to the point.
There’s a pause on the line, and I can hear Willow shifting around, probably sitting up in bed. “He left in a rush last night,” she says slowly, the sleepiness still clinging to her words. “He barely said goodbye. I was half asleep, but I heard him mention something about heading to the mountain pass.”
I feel a spark of hope at this clue. “Willow, Ezekiel’s missing. He and his scout group haven’t reported back, and now River and some warriors have gone after them. I’m going to find them. The more of us searching, the better our chances of finding Ezekiel quickly.”
Willow’s response is immediate. “I’m coming with you. Something feels off about this, Namaari. I need to make sure River’s okay.”
I hesitate. “Willow, it might be dangerous. I don’t want to put you in harm’s way.”
But Willow is insistent. “I’m not staying here while my brother could be in trouble. I’m going with you, Namaari. No arguments.”
I sigh, realizing there’s no point in trying to dissuade her. “Fine. We’ll meet at the border of the Silvermist pack, near the cliffs. Hardly anyone goes there, so we won’t be easily spotted. Bring something precious from River with you.”
“Got it,” Willow agrees. “I’ll see you soon.”
As soon as the call ends, I start packing a backpack with the essentials. Zephyr sits on my bed, watching me with his sharp eyes. “Are you not going to tell your mates that you’re leaving?” he asks, his tone curious but knowing.
I huff, shoving a sweater into my bag. “I’m not in the mood for a conversation with them right now. Besides, they don’t tell me everything, apparently.”
Zephyr tilts his head, clearly unconvinced. “The triplets didn’t say anything because they thought you’d be mad at them. And you know you would be, even if there’s no reason to be. It’s Ezekiel’s job to scout.”
I pause, the truth of his words sinking in. I stop packing for a moment and sigh deeply. “You’re right, but still. They kept something from me when they know how much I care about Ezekiel. I should know if something’s wrong with my friends. And if I tell them I’m going to find Ezekiel now, they’ll lock me in my room.”
Zephyr gives me a playful grin. “Well, maybe that would make things a bit more exciting, don’t you think?”
I roll my eyes at him, trying not to smile. “You’re impossible.”
Quickly, I change into a large, loose T-shirt, shorts, and a pair of sneakers—something comfortable for the journey ahead. As I zip up my backpack and sling it over my shoulder, I look over at Zephyr, who is watching me with wide, worried eyes. "I’ll be back soon, hopefully with Ezekiel, I promise," I say, my voice steady with determination.
Zephyr chirps back, his small voice tinged with concern, “Be careful, Namaari.”
I give him a reassuring nod before moving to the window, I take a deep breath and push it open, climbing out and dropping silently to the ground below.
I take off, staying low, moving quickly towards the border. Every instinct in me is screaming to get to the cliffs as fast as possible. Ezekiel needs me, and I won’t let him down.
