I didn’t sleep. Even after my shift ended. Even after the storm outside faded into distant rain and muted city noise. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw silver. Cold silver eyes watching me from the doorway of that hospital room. Not threatening. Worse. Knowing. I sat alone in the empty staff lounge, fingers curled around another untouched cup of coffee, replaying every word Kael had said. The things hunting the edges of this world. The phrase sat wrong inside me. Like a warning I didn’t fully understand yet. “You look terrible.” I glanced up sharply. Doctor Hale stood in the doorway, already dressed for another shift, expression tired but observant. “That obvious?” I asked. “Yes.” He stepped inside, grabbing a folder from the counter before looking at me more carefully.
