At Any Cost

Kyrie and Chase Kyrie sat on the couch next to Chase pretending to watch the movie that they had picked. She chewed on her lip as she mulled over all the new and rather crazy information that she had received today. She didn’t really understand it all yet but she had come to some understanding of the mate bond and the pull it created. She also understood that she wanted Chase desperately and was considering asking him to spend the night. “What’s wrong with?” Chase asked seemingly sensing her restlessness. “Nothing is wrong really,” Kyrie told him, “I’m just thinking about the overload of information I received. I spent my whole life believing it was all a myth, only to find out that it’s not and that I’m a Lycan and you are a werewolf. And we’re mated, or will be.” Kyrie blushed talking about mating. “We don’t have to do anything that you aren’t ready for,” Chase said soothingly, pulling her into his arms. Kyrie shivered as the sparks danced along her body. “But what if I am ready?” Chase swallowed hard by as his body instantly responded to her statement. “Once we mate and I mark you, there’s no going back. I won’t be able to be away from you and I also can’t leave my pack so you would have to move in with me very soon.” Kyrie chewed on her bottom lip, the gesture driving him crazy as she thought about it. “What will I be at your pack?” Kyrie questioned. Wanting to be closer to her, Chase pulled her into his lap. Kyrie took a sharp breath when she realized that he was already hard and ready for her. “You would be my Luna, my partner and equal, helping me to run the pack,” he told her as he buried his face in her neck, inhaling her scent. She smelled like caramel and chocolate and it drove him wild. “What if they don’t like me? What if they want a werewolf as a Luna and not a Lycan?” she asked him. “They will love you,” he replied. He trailed gentle kisses along her neck and she hissed as he placed one over the sensitive spot between her neck and shoulder where his mark would go. They were suddenly interrupted by a loud knock on the door. Chase sighed and moved her to sit next to it on the couch. “I’ll get it for you. Hold that thought,” he said and placed a quick kiss on her lips. Kyrie sat there for a moment but was surprised to hear an unfamiliar male voice. Deciding to check it out, she walked up behind Chase and peeked around him. She missed the first part of their conversation but was disturbed by what she heard. “How many rogues?” Chase was asking. The man he was talking to was enormous. At least 7 feet tall and solid muscle. He also smelled different. He didn’t smell like a human but also not like a wolf. Chase wrapped an arm around her and the now familiar sparks comforted her. “Hello ma’am, I’m Michael,” the huge man said holding out his hand. Kyrie took his hand warily and shook it. His hand was easily large enough to crush her skull. “So what’s going on?” she asked. “Michael here has spotted several rogues hanging around here tonight. Michael, by the way, is that huge alligator that hangs around here,” Chase told her. “Oh, that’s why he smells like that,” Kyrie mused, “And what are rogues?” Michael gave a laugh, “Hopefully, not a bad smell.” Kyrie slapped a hand over her mouth, “I am so sorry, that came out so terribly. No, it’s not a bad smell.” “Let’s get back to business. How many and how close?” Chase asked. “At least 10, and not very far away. I ate one of them but there were several more. I knew you were here so I wanted to come let you know. Maybe call for some help,” Michael explained. “Kyrie, I need you to stay inside and lock all the doors. Don’t let anyone but me inside. I’m going to have my Gamma come and stand guard outside your house,” Chase told her. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. “Ok. Will you be safe?” she asked him wrapping her arms around him. “Absolutely,” he replied. Chase ran out the door and she was shocked when he immediately transformed into a huge black wolf with glowing green eyes. He turned away and let out a long howl before running off with Michael still in human form, running behind him. Kyrie quickly locked the door before running and checking the back door and all the windows. She went and peeked back out and saw a huge chocolate brown wolf come trotting up. It stopped at her front porch and stood at attention there for a moment before beginning to walk around her house. “That’s the Gamma,” Kahlan told me. “Why did he send him here?” Kyrie asked. “Because his job is to protect you, to the death if necessary,” Kahlan replied. “Why though?” Kyrie questioned. “The Gamma’s job is literally to protect his Luna, no matter what. And I’m guessing because I smell several more wolves, that there is a whole Luna guard.” “Oh, is that what I’m smelling as well? The other wolves?” Kyrie asked. “Yes,” Kahlan said sounding satisfied. Chase ran through the swamp in his wolf form, scenting the rogues near the border of his pack land but far enough outside so that his border patrol wouldn’t come after them. Chase mind linked his Beta and Gamma, checking their positions and he soon smelled Justin’s wolf getting closer. He saw the grey and white wolf right before he saw several sets of red eyes glaring at them from in the trees. He smelled the rest of his warriors and Michael who was still in human form behind them. “Get them!” he shouted through the mind link, “leave one alive so we can find out who’s sending them.” The wolves attacked the rogues who were terribly outnumbered. Chase grabbed one by the neck and shook his head, ripping his throat out. He saw Michael in his gator form grabbing a rogue and going into a death roll, ripping it in half. The wolves continued to attack until there was only one rogue remaining. It crouched on the ground, baring his neck in submission. Chase shifted back into his human form and let his Alpha aura seep out. “Shift!” he ordered. The rogue complied and shifted into a young guy, he didn’t look more than 18, and appeared terrified. “Take him to the cells,” Chase told Justin, “I’ve got to get back to my mate. I will question him tomorrow. Kyrie stayed by the window watching as the wolf continued to patrol around her house. Suddenly she was assaulted by a terrible smell just as the wolf stopped and let out a menacing growl, his hackles rising. “What is that horrible smell?” Kyrie asked. “Rogues,” Kahlan replied grimly. As she watched, she saw two pairs of red eyes start approaching through the trees. They ran at the chocolate brown wolf and they began to fight. One of the rogues tried to slip past the Gamma as he was fighting the rogues, but the Gamma merely tossed the first rogue into tree and turned and grabbed the other one by his back leg and threw him around in front of him. He quickly grabbed it by the neck and promptly ripped its head off. The other rogue shook itself and ran back at the Gamma, who made quick work of that one as well. Literally, tearing it to pieces. Kyrie gave a little gasp of shock watching the brutal fight. “I told you that he would protect you at any cost,” Kahlan said with a great deal of satisfaction, “I wish we could shift because I would have liked to tear them to shreds.” “Violent, huh?” Kyrie told her Lycan. “You have no idea,” Kahlan replied. No more rogues appeared and Kyrie was relieved when Chase’s huge black wolf reappeared. The two men shifted into their human forms and she was shocked to see that were both naked. The other man ran off for a second and returned carrying two pairs of sweatpants. They came up to the door and Kyrie let them in the house.
