Justin and Lucien

“I wonder why a reptile shifter is hanging around her place,” Justin mused as they made their way through the swamp towards her house.

“It’s all very strange,” Lucien replied, carefully stepping onto a row of cypress knees to make his way across the water, “It seems like nothing makes sense about the situation since she arrived here.”

“I can’t imagine not knowing that you’re a shifter your whole life,” Justin said following along behind Lucien.

“Well if you were raised by humans with your wolf bound, you wouldn’t know either,” Lucien told him.

The two of them walked in silence for a while. They came into view of her house just in time to see her leave with Chase.

“This is perfect,” Lucien said, “Now we can have a proper look without her trying to figure out what we’re doing.”

“Well let’s get to work. We don’t know how long they’ll be gone,” Justin responded.

They walked along the edge of the water on their property for a few minutes and suddenly the huge gator swam right up to them.

“Shift so we can talk,” Justin ordered.

Instantly, a huge man was standing in front of them with a smirk. He was easily seven feet tall and 300 pounds of solid muscle.

“I really hope that he’s not wanting to fight,” Lucien mind linked the Beta.

“Me either,” Justin link back.

“What do you boys want with me?” the man asked them, crossing his arms over his massive chest.

“Why are you hanging out around our Luna’s house,” Justin asked the man.

“I don’t think that we’re at cross-purposes here boys,” he told them, “The name’s Michael by the way.”

“Lucien and this is Justin,” the Gamma said cautiously offering his hand.

Michael gave him a firm handshake before offering his hand to Justin as well.

“So, I’m the Alpha of a very small pack of reptile shifters in the area. I knew at the first tiny sniff that she was a Royal. And after watching things around here for a few days I also quickly realized that she didn’t have a clue. So I figured her folks would be coming to find her eventually and I need an audience with the king. I was thinking if I protected her in the meantime that maybe he would give me a few minutes of his time,” Michael explained.

“Well thank you for doing that,” Justin said, “We honestly were expecting the worst when the Alpha gave us our assignment.”

“I think that since I’m presuming that she is your Alpha’s mate, maybe some help guarding her is in order,” Michael told them, “I caught some rogues sniffing around here the other night. Thor ate them thou.”

“Thor?” Lucien asked.

“My gator. Can’t say they tasted very good though,” Michael made a face thinking about it.

Lucien immediately mind linked Chase. “Alpha we have a problem, and it’s not the gator.”

“We will talk as soon as I get back,” Chase linked him back.

“Well Michael, I appreciate the information. We’re going to come back with the Alpha later, and we will definitely be setting up some warriors to help you guard Kyrie,” Lucien told him.

“Not a problem gentleman,” Michael said and gave them a brief salute.

Just as suddenly as he appeared, the huge gator was back and turned away, swimming back into the swamp.

Chase and Kyrie

Chase gave Kyrie directions to the restaurant and decided to take the chance on getting to know her a bit better during the drive.

“So what brought you to Louisiana?” Chase asked her.

“Well, umm, I just wanted a change?” Kyrie responded a bit evasively.

“You know you can trust me Kyrie,” Chase told her, both him and his wolf feeling concerned for her.

“I do feel like I can trust you,” she said with a sigh, “It’s just difficult for me to talk about.”

“Well I am willing to listen to you. And I won’t judge you. I do actually care about you,”Chase said gently.

“I kind of ran away,” Kyrie said after being silent for a moment.

“Who did you run away from?” he questioned.

“I ran away from my ex-boyfriend. He was beating me and abusing me in so many ways. And I really felt like a prisoner because I tried to leave after the first time he hit me, but he beat me savagely and told me that I could never leave,” Kyrie said tearfully.

“I’m going to find him and I am going to rip him to shreds,” Robicheaux growled angrily in Chase’s mind.

“Yes we are,” Chase agreed with him wolf.

“I’m so sorry you had to go through that, love. You don’t deserve that,” Chase told her, “How did you manage to escape?”

“My birth parents gave me a trust fund that my adopted parents told me about when I turned 18, and I never told Declan about it. So when I found out that he was going out of town for business for a week, I realized that it was my chance. Normally, he had some friend of his come and watch me when he was gone but apparently the guy was running late the that Declan left. It worked out so perfectly actually , I hopped on a bus to the airport with one duffel bag. I paid cash for everything. Since Louisiana has always fascinated me, I decided to come here. I paid cash for my house as well,” Kyrie explained as she pulled into a parking spot at the restaurant.

“Our mate is so smart and strong,” Robicheaux told Chase, “I’m so happy and proud that the Moon Goddess thought we were worthy of her.”

“I totally agree,” Chase said.

“I am worried that this guy is going to come looking for her though,” Robicheaux growled, “He clearly knew how special our mate was and wanted her for himself.”

“I think you’re correct about that,” Chase agreed.

“I think you are very smart and very brave for figuring out a way to escape,” Chase said as he reached over and grabbed Kyrie’s hand.

Kyrie looked in surprise at their joined hands as she felt strange sparks dancing across her skin where it touched his.

“ Mate!” she heard a feminine voice say.

“Did you hear that?” Kyrie asked Chase looking around in surprise.

“No, I didn’t hear anything,” Chase replied although he had a very good idea of who and what she had heard.

“Never mind, I must be imagining things,” Kyrie shook her head as though to clear her thoughts.

“Let’s go get some lunch, love,” Chase told her giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

Right at this moment, Chase received the mind link from the Gamma. He couldn’t wait to see what his guys had found out
