“Who on earth would want to live in this place?”
After fifteen minutes in the forest, he could see houses not far ahead and sped up.
The small neighbourhood was really quiet, with no people in the streets. This gave Daven a bad feeling. Almost every house looked empty, with no sign that anyone lived in them. He looked left and right, searching for the house he was going to.
Finally, after searching for five minutes, he found it at the end of the street.
This house was quite different from the others. It was bigger and had something off about it that he couldn’t understand.
He got off his scooter and took out three food containers that had delicious smells of different aromas, making Daven’s belly grumble.
After ringing the doorbell for a long time, the door was finally answered.
A young girl wearing a long, shabby dress, who looked around eighteen or nineteen, opened the door.
Daven didn’t expect it to be a young girl. He had been expecting an elderly person because he couldn’t imagine any teenager wanting to live in such an isolated place.
Looking at her, he noticed bruises all over her arms, legs and face. Daven frowned and guessed something was wrong, but said nothing about it.
“Good morning, ma’am. Delivery for...” He looked at the name. “Uhm, Tom Gerrard.”
Suddenly, a man with a long scar across his face came to the door.
“What took you so long?” He turned to the girl and said, “Bring them over at the back.”
Then he left.
The girl, who had a pitiful look on her face, slowly took the food from Daven, secretly giving him a small piece of paper when she made sure the man had left.
When he read it, Daven’s eyes widened in shock.
He quickly whispered, “I’m sorry, but I can’t.”
Helping her was just asking for trouble. Although he felt sorry for her, he couldn’t help her.
The girl knelt down and pleaded with him in a low voice, afraid of being heard.
“Please, get me out of here. I’m begging you, please.”
She began sobbing, leaving Daven with no choice but to give in.
He sighed and said to himself, “Oh, I’m so dead today.”
“Fine, hurry up.”
Hearing him agree to help her, she quickly raised her head to look at him.
“Thank you so much.”
She quickly got up and went away. When she came back, she brought another girl with her who was about nine years old.
The teenage girl began to speak in sign language with the little girl, which surprised and confused Daven.
“You need to get going, okay? I promise to come to you once I escape.”
She hugged the little girl with tears streaming down her face. This scene touched Daven, who was standing at the door.
The teenage girl looked at Daven and wiped away her tears.
“Please take her with you.”
“Wait, aren’t you coming?” Daven asked with a concerned look.
The girl quickly shook her head.
“No, we can’t escape at the same time. They will easily catch us...”
“Katrina!”
The girl quickly slammed the door and went to the backyard, where three men were seated.
“Where were you all this time? Quickly, serve us!” the man said impatiently.
Meanwhile, Daven didn’t waste any more time. He took the little girl to his scooter, his heart beating fast because he didn’t know who he was dealing with.
They could be murderers.
When they got out of the forest, only then did Daven relax.
Now he had to think about where he would keep the little girl.
He thought about taking her to the restaurant, but who would look after her while he was out delivering food?
He sighed when he thought about Brittney.
Brittney is probably very busy right now.
Still thinking, he suddenly thought of someone.
“Granny Tae!”
He took out his phone for directions, as he wasn’t familiar with the roads. After getting the map, he turned left at the traffic lights and headed towards Granny Tae’s house.
Twenty minutes later, he stopped in front of Granny Tae’s house.
Looking at the time, he silently cursed.
“F*ck!”
For sure, this is my first and last day at work.
He looked at the girl with gentle eyes, then looked at Granny Tae’s house before saying,
“Let’s go.”
He helped the little girl off the scooter and walked up to the doorstep. He inhaled, then exhaled, and rang the doorbell.
A second later, Granny Tae opened the door with a gentle smile.
Daven didn’t give her time to greet him and went straight to asking,
“Granny Tae, can you please do me a small, little, tiny favour?”
Granny Tae didn’t notice the little girl standing next to Daven.
“What can I help you with, honey?”
“I’m late for work. Can you please look after her for me, please?”
He bent down to the girl and said,
“I’ll be back soon, alright? She’s going to look after you, okay?”
Granny Tae barely had time to react before she saw Daven already sitting on his scooter, waving at them.
“Thank you, Granny Tae!”
Then he went off to his next delivery.
She stood there, staring at the little girl dumbfounded. The girl was a little dirty and looked exhausted.
When Granny Tae came back to her senses, she took the little girl’s hand and brought her inside.
“Come on, dear. Let’s get you cleaned up.”
Daven’s second delivery was only five minutes away from Granny Tae’s house, which was a relief.
“Where the heck have you been all this time? We almost died of hunger because of you!” a sissy boy at the door said, looking at him with scorn.
Then a girl popped her head out and said lazily,
“Let’s just eat. I’m hungry already.”
She gave him his tip and took the food from him.
Tip?
Daven had already forgotten about tips.
He smiled apologetically and turned around to leave.
“Just one more left.”
“Wait, am I the only one that smells hunger?”
Timothy, who was sitting lazily at his desk, took out his phone to check the time.
“...”
Lloyd, who was sitting with Brittney, said nothing and focused on his work with a stern face.
Brittney didn’t even notice that Timothy was talking, as she had her head buried in the file she was holding.
Seeing that no one was saying anything, Timothy said no more and returned to his work.
