Chapter 11: Lady Brit

1164 Words
As the days passed, Daven and Brittney still hadn't gotten any closer than they had been before, and this was what Brittney feared the most. Daven discovered that Brittney was a police officer and that the city they lived in was more hazardous than he had imagined. Today was Daven's appointment for his checkup, and he was pretty much annoyed about it because he didn't think it was necessary. After leaving the house with Brittney, it was his first time stepping outside, as he usually stayed inside the whole day, especially in his study room. They stood next to the road, waiting for a cab. It was a hot day, and standing under the sun was not for Daven, as the heat made him feel a light headache. After waiting for five minutes, he couldn't take it anymore. He looked at Brittney, who had sweat on her forehead. "Why don't you have a car? I'm melting here." Hearing his last sentence, she looked at his forehead, which was dry, unlike her sweaty forehead. She looked left, then right, before responding to his question. "I like walking." Her eyes already told him that she was lying, but Daven asked no more questions, although he was curious to know the truth. When he saw a cab coming from afar, driving really fast, his hopes went up. He lazily stopped it with a smile. "Finally." The cab stopped in front of them, but Brittney said the unthinkable. "Sorry, we are not getting in." As Daven was opening the backseat door, he heard this and his mood changed drastically. For a second, he froze, then huffed. "Yes, we are." He proceeded to open the door wider for himself to get in. Brittney found it funny because he didn't have any money on him. "I wonder where you are going to get the money to pay for the fare." Daven, who was already sitting in the backseat, froze like a statue. He immediately left planet Earth, his mind wandering somewhere in the galaxy. Seeing no movement from the person in the backseat, the driver was getting impatient and asked, "Are you going or staying?" "He is staying." She pulled him out of the cab and closed the door. When Daven returned to Earth, the cab was no longer in their sight. Immediately, he stomped his feet childishly and looked at Brittney coldly. "I don't want to lose my temper in such heat..." Brittney didn't look at him, but she could feel his cold aura encircling her. "Did you see how madly fast he was driving? What if an accident happens..." She was interrupted by Daven, who had a grin on his face. "And what if I die in such heat?" "I'm already sweating more than you. Why am I not dead yet?" Brittney had already gotten used to him and sometimes talked back when he was being ridiculous. "Pff!" A few seconds later, another cab stopped in front of them, and they quickly got in. When the car started moving, Daven sat by the window and rolled it down for some cool, fresh air. But as soon as the hot air brushed against his face, he quickly moved his face away from the window and sat lazily, looking outside at the view. The city didn't seem to be as dangerous as Brittney had told him. It had such a nice view around every corner of the street. 'Could it be that she was just exaggerating? This city looks calm and harmless.' Thinking of this, he softly muttered, "Women." Brittney, who had other thoughts on her mind, received a text message and revealed a smile when she read it. Daven was curious, but he didn't pay attention to her anymore. As soon as he was reminded of something, he continued watching through the car window. Soon, they stopped next to the big hospital. Daven was mesmerised by how huge the hospital was. It made him feel so small. He couldn't believe that he hadn't noticed it the last time he was there. When they entered the hospital, all eyes were on them for a moment, making Daven feel uncomfortable. "Is that Lady Brit?" A soft whisper was heard by Daven. 'Lady Brit?' Frowning, he secretly glanced at Brittney, who seemed as though she hadn't heard anything. Brittney was known as Lady Brit because she was the first and only woman police officer brave enough to serve in this dangerous city. Because of this, she was respected by every citizen and loved for her kindness. Daven wanted to ask about it, but he swallowed his question and continued walking forward. When they got into the lift, which was almost full, Daven almost stopped it immediately and sprang out. He felt really uncomfortable whenever he made even the slightest movement and something brushed against his back. When he turned his head around, a huge, muscular man winked at him. Immediately, he turned his head back, with a shiver running down his spine. 'I feel sorry for the person that has to take in this huge log of a man.' Daven wanted to get out really fast, but the lift took its own time, which angered him. When they finally reached their floor, Daven was the first to walk out, which puzzled Brittney. As they walked, two nurses who were chatting to each other came in their direction. As they got closer, Brittney, who had been silent almost all the way there, smiled and called out excitedly. "Tara! Frita!" "Brittney!" Both of them said it at the same time. They rushed forward and hugged Brittney. Seeing them embracing each other made Daven feel like an outsider. He secretly rolled his eyes. "Girls." "Wow! You've grown into a beautiful woman, ain't it right, Tara? I'm now beginning to get jealous." Frita pulled out her pitiful face, which made them giggle happily. "Oh, Frita, you haven't changed after all these years? That's more than I could ask for," Brittney said in a cheerful voice. "Cute things don't change, hun." Frita displayed the proud face she always showed off. "Eww, who told you that you are cute? What's the best joke to tell?" Tara pretended to be annoyed and rolled her eyes at Frita. Frita was about to rebuke her when she finally noticed a man who looked familiar standing next to Brittney. "Who's this?" After the question was asked, all eyes were on him. Brittney's heart started to beat fast as she didn't know how to introduce Daven to them. Seeing her not saying anything, Daven was about to speak when Frita spoke. "Wait, don't tell me that he's..." She was interrupted by Tara, who secretly pinched Frita's waist. "Oh right, we have to get going now. Let's meet up again at lunch." She knew very well that nothing good was going to come out of Frita's mouth if she let her finish. "Okay, bye." Brittney didn't want to stay any longer and quickly left.
