Chapter 31: The hunt mood

The penthouse no longer felt like home, it felt like a battlefield. Security flooded the building within minutes of the attack Guards, surveillance teams, weapons. Everything tightened but Leonard wasn't interested in protection anymore. He stood in the center of the living room, phone in his hand, his voice calm— "I want every camera in a five-mile radius pulled," he said. "Trace entry points, exits, vehicles—everything." A pause. "And find out who let them in." He ended the call without waiting for a response. Behind him, Isabella watched quietly. "You're going after her," she said. Leonard didn't turn. "I'm ending this." There was no hesitation in his voice not even doubt. Isabella stepped closer. "Then I'm coming with you." That made him turn. "No." He said, firm and immediate. Her eyes hardened. "You don't get to decide that." "This isn't a discussion, Isabella." "And this isn't just your fight," she shot back. Silence. The tension between them shifted—Not emotional but strategic. Leonard stepped closer. "It became my fight the moment she targeted you," he said quietly. Isabella didn't back down. "And it became mine the moment she tried to destroy us." Their eyes locked. Two strong wills, neither willing to bend. Then— Leonard exhaled slowly. "Stay close to me," he said finally. Not permission, not agreement, a compromise. Isabella nodded once. That was enough. An hour later— The city lights blurred past as their car sped through the streets. "Location confirmed," Leonard's assistant said through the speaker. "One of Victoria's safe properties. Private access. Minimal staff." Leonard's gaze darkened. "Send the coordinates." A soft beep. Isabella glanced at the screen. A secluded estate near the coast. "She's not even hiding," Isabella said quietly. Leonard's grip tightened slightly. "No."A pause. "She's waiting." The gates opened before they even arrived. That alone was wrong, too easy. The car rolled in slowly, the estate was massive and luxurious. Silent. No guards in sight, no movement. Just... stillness. Leonard stepped out first, his instincts were screaming now. "Stay behind me," he said again. This time— Isabella listened. They moved inside together, the door lock were already open. The air inside was cold, too quiet. Then—A voice. "Right on time." Victoria. She stepped out from the shadows calm and composed. Dressed like she wasn't expecting a war—But hosting one. "I was wondering how long it would take you," she said lightly. Leonard didn't waste time. "Call this off." Victoria smiled. "Or what?" The temperature in the room dropped instantly. Leonard stepped forward. "Or I end you." No emotion, no bluff, just words. Victoria's smile didn't fade. "That's the Leonard I remember," she said softly. Her gaze shifted to Isabella."And you..." A small pause. "You survived longer than I expected." Isabella stepped forward this time. "I'm not done yet." Victoria laughed quietly. "Oh, I know." Then— She clapped once, the sound echoed. And suddenly the doors behind them slammed shut, locked. Isabella's heart skipped—But she didn't panic. Leonard didn't move because he already knew. "Checkmate," Victoria said softly. But Leonard smiled, cold, dangerous. "You think I came unprepared?" Leonard whispered. Victoria's expression flickered—Just slightly. Then— Voices outside, movement. Armed security surrounded the estate. Victoria's smile faded. Leonard stepped closer. "This ends tonight." Silence. For the first time— Victoria looked cornered, but then— she laughed softly and unbothered. "You still don't understand," she said. Leonard's eyes narrowed. "Understand what?" Victoria tilted her head slightly. "That I'm not the only one you should be worried about." Silence. And just like that— Everything shifted again. Isabella's chest tightened slightly. "What do you mean?" she asked. Victoria's eyes locked onto hers, dark knowing. "You really think all of this..." A slow smile formed."...was just about me?" Leonard's expression changed instantly. "Who?" he demanded. Victoria stepped back slowly. "You'll find out soon enough." And then— The lights went out again. Total darkness. Gunshots echoed, chaos exploded, and this time, it wasn't controlled.
