"The Comic Conundrum"

The weeks following the ritual were a whirlwind of recovery and reflection. Sam was slowly regaining their strength, and the group had become inseparable. They spent most of their time together, trying to return to some semblance of normalcy. But normalcy was hard to come by when you’d recently battled a dark entity. One Saturday morning, Jenna burst into Alex’s room, waving a flyer in the air. “Guess what’s happening next weekend?” Alex looked up from their laptop, where they’d been half-heartedly trying to catch up on homework. “What?” “The annual Metro City Comic Con!” Jenna exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Cosplay, panels, merch—it’s going to be epic!” Ryan, who was lounging on Alex’s bed scrolling through his phone, perked up. “Comic Con? Like, the one with all the superhero stuff?” “Exactly!” Jenna said. “And guess what? I already got us tickets.” Alex raised an eyebrow. “Us?” “Yes, us,” Jenna said, plopping down on the floor next to Alex. “You, me, Ryan, and Sam. It’ll be fun! A much-needed break from all the… you know, demon stuff.” Alex hesitated. They hadn’t been to a convention before, and the idea of being surrounded by crowds of people in costumes was a little overwhelming. But before they could voice their concerns, Sam walked in. “What’s going on?” Sam asked, looking between the group. “Jenna’s dragging us to Comic Con,” Ryan said, holding up the flyer. Sam’s eyes lit up. “Really? I’ve always wanted to go to one of those.” Jenna grinned. “See? Even Sam’s excited. It’s settled. We’re going.” Alex sighed. “Fine. But if I get trampled by a group of stormtroopers, I’m blaming you.” The Preparation The week leading up to Comic Con was a flurry of activity. Jenna, who had been planning her cosplay for months, decided to go as Lady Lightning, her favorite superheroine. Ryan, after much deliberation, settled on a zombie version of Captain Justice, complete with fake blood and tattered clothing. Sam, still recovering but feeling much better, decided to keep it simple with a casual cosplay of a character from their favorite indie comic. Alex, on the other hand, was at a loss. “I don’t even know who to go as,” they complained as they browsed through costume ideas online. “How about Shadowstrike?” Sam suggested, pointing to a picture of a brooding, cloaked figure. “He’s cool, and you’d totally pull it off.” Alex considered it. Shadowstrike was a mysterious anti-hero with a tragic backstory, and his costume was relatively simple—a black cloak, a mask, and some armor. “Okay,” they said finally. “Shadowstrike it is.” The Big Day The day of the convention arrived, and the group met up at Jennifer’s house to get ready. Jenna’s Lady Lightning costume was flawless, complete with a lightning bolt emblem and a flowing cape. Ryan’s zombie Captain Justice was gruesomely realistic, and Sam’s indie comic character looked effortlessly cool. Alex’s Shadowstrike costume, while not as elaborate as Jenna’s, was surprisingly effective. The black cloak and mask gave them an air of mystery, and the armor added just the right touch of intimidation. “You look awesome,” Sam said, giving Alex a thumbs-up. Alex smiled. “Thanks. You too.” As they made their way to the convention center, the excitement was palpable. The streets were filled with people in costumes, from superheroes to anime characters to movie villains. The energy was infectious, and even Alex couldn’t help but feel a little excited. The Convention Inside the convention center, the group was immediately overwhelmed by the sheer size of the event. There were rows upon rows of booths selling everything from comic books to action figures to handmade crafts. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the occasional burst of music from a nearby panel. “Where do we even start?” Ryan asked, looking around in awe. “How about the artist alley?” Sam suggested. “I want to check out some of the indie comics.” Jenna nodded. “Good idea. And then we can hit up the cosplay contest later.” They spent the next few hours exploring the convention, stopping to take pictures with other cosplayers and browsing through the various booths. Alex even managed to find a rare Shadowstrike comic they’d been looking for. As they were walking through the artist alley, Sam suddenly stopped. “Hey, look at this,” they said, pointing to a booth with a sign that read “Mystic Realms: A Dark Fantasy Comic.” The booth was decorated with eerie, gothic artwork, and the man behind the table looked like he’d stepped out of one of his own comics. He had long, dark hair, piercing blue eyes, and a mysterious smile. “Can I help you?” he asked as the group approached. “We were just admiring your artwork,” Sam said. “It’s amazing.” The man smiled. “Thank you. I’m the creator of Mystic Realms. My name is Victor.” Alex felt a shiver run down their spine. There was something... off about Victor, but they couldn’t quite put their finger on it. “We’re big fans of indie comics,” Jenna said, flipping through one of the issues. “This is really cool.” Victor’s smile widened. “I’m glad you like it. If you’re interested, I’m doing a special signing later today. I’ll even throw in a free poster.” “That sounds great,” Sam said, their eyes lighting up. As they walked away from the booth, Alex couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. “Did anyone else get a weird vibe from that guy?” they asked. Ryan shrugged. “He seemed fine to me. A little intense, maybe, but that’s just his artist persona.” Alex nodded, but they couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The Signing Later that afternoon, the group returned to Victor’s booth for the signing. There was a small crowd gathered, and Victor was signing comics and posters with a flourish. When it was their turn, Sam handed Victor their copy of Mystic Realms. “We’re really excited to meet you,” they said. Victor smiled. “The pleasure is mine. You have a good eye for art.” As he signed the comic, Alex noticed something strange. Victor’s eyes seemed to glow for a moment, and the air around him grew colder. But when they blinked, it was gone. “Here you go,” Victor said, handing the comic back to Sam. “Enjoy.” As they walked away, Alex couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. “Did anyone else see that?” they asked. “See what?” Jenna asked, looking confused. “Never mind,” Alex said, shaking their heads. They were probably just imagining things. The Incident The rest of the day passed without incident, and the group had a great time exploring the convention. But as they were leaving, Alex noticed something strange. Sam was acting... off. They were quieter than usual, and their movements seemed almost robotic. “Sam, are you okay?” Alex asked, concerned. Sam nodded, but their eyes were distant. “I’m fine. Just tired.” Alex wasn’t convinced, but before they could press further, Sam suddenly collapsed. “Sam!” Alex shouted, rushing to their side. Jenna and Ryan were right behind them. “What’s wrong?” Jenna asked, her voice filled with panic. Sam’s eyes fluttered open, and they looked up at Alex, their expression filled with fear. “It’s… it’s back.” Alex’s heart sank. They knew exactly what Sam meant. The entity was back. The Aftermath The group quickly got Sam to a nearby hospital, where they were checked out by the doctors. Physically, Sam was fine, but they were clearly shaken. “We need to figure out what’s going on,” Alex said, their voice filled with determination. “And we need to stop it.” Jenna nodded. “Agreed. But how?” Alex thought for a moment. “We need to find Victor. He’s the key to all of this.” Ryan frowned. “You think he’s involved?” “I don’t know,” Alex admitted. “But we need to find out.” As they left the hospital, Alex couldn’t shake the feeling of dread. They’d thought they were done with the supernatural, but it seemed like it was just getting started.
