A loud, shrilling noise pierced through my ear and yanked me out of sleep. I shot up, groggy and irritated, scanning the room to find the source of the unbearable sound. My phone. It was Jackson. I didn’t even hesitate—I declined the call and tossed the phone to the side of the bed with a groan. My head throbbed with every heartbeat. The hangover had arrived in full force, wrapping itself around my skull like a vice. “Ugh,” I muttered, dragging myself out of bed. Why did I drink like that? What was I even trying to escape from? Right. Everything. I popped an Advil and brewed a strong black coffee, the bitter aroma giving me a small sense of comfort.
