Chapter 2

"Mirabelle!" Jeffrey frowned. "Since when did you become so aggressive? You know Lila has always been innocent. She's basically still a kid..." A kid? Would a "kid" insist on staying at our house on our third wedding anniversary? Would a "kid" walk into our bedroom and deliberately take a picture of an oil painting before the paint had even dried? Would a "kid" just happen to have an asthma attack at the perfect moment after the painting went viral, then conveniently collapse into Jeffrey's arms? Maybe my cold expression caught Jeffrey off guard. He instinctively reached out and grabbed my arm, completely oblivious to the fresh wounds covering it. A sharp, stinging pain spread from my arm straight into my chest, then through my entire body. Oddly enough, that pain cleared my mind. I had always known Jeffrey had a childhood sweetheart. Even so, I chose to follow my heart and marry him. I had foolishly believed that one day he would see how much I loved him. That he would eventually fall in love with me too. That we'd become the kind of couple everyone envied. But today, I finally realized something. I had never once made it into Jeffrey's heart. The three years of love I'd poured into this marriage had turned me into nothing more than a joke. "Mirabelle..." "Fine," I cut him off, "I'll go to the hospital. I'll tell her exactly what you want me to." "You will?" I nodded. "I will." Only then did Jeffrey let go of my arm and carefully help me into the car. He drove faster than usual, and we reached the hospital in less than thirty minutes. He supported me as we walked inside. "Let's get your injuries treated first." "Oh, so you finally decided to show up?" Jeffrey's mother, Kate's voice rang out behind me. Before I even had a chance to turn around, she grabbed me by the arm and practically dragged me into Lila Wood's hospital room. Jeffrey frowned. But he didn't stop her. Lila was wearing a hospital gown, yet her complexion looked perfectly healthy. She even had on subtle makeup that most guys probably wouldn't notice, and her silky hair looked freshly styled. Standing beside her, I looked utterly pathetic. "Mirabelle, you're here." Lila blinked her reddened eyes. "This is all my fault. I just wanted to show everyone how good you and Jeffrey have always been to me. I never imagined things would get this out of hand. Can you forgive me?" "It's not even that big of a deal. Why are you still making such a fuss over it?" Kate snorted. Standing protectively beside Lila, she glared at me. "I think you just don't want her to be happy." "Please don't say that." Lila gently held Kate's hand. The two of them looked more like family than I ever had. "It really is my fault." "Oh, enough already." Kate rolled her eyes dramatically. "Stop walking around looking like the world ended. Don't forget, you were the one crying and begging to marry Jeffrey. We never begged you to join this family." She was right. I had begged to marry Jeffrey. I had even gone to my brother and asked him to invest five hundred million dollars into Jeffrey's company. Without that investment, Jeffrey's company never would have gone public or grown into what it is today. I still remembered the day the company was listed. Kate had held my hand with tears in her eyes and said the Miller family was blessed to have me as their daughter-in-law. My gaze swept across everyone in the room. Lila looked pitiful. Kate looked arrogant. Jeffrey looked indifferent. Their expressions were all different. But they had one thing in common. They all believed I was the one on trial.
