"Marriage is something sacred, something special and something you cling to in times of desperation and loneliness. As long as you two love each other, may nothing stand in your way. Now you may kiss the bride."
As soon as the words left the mouth of the priest, Maximilien turned to kiss his bride, who had somehow turned into his grandfather. He took a couple of steps back in shock.
"Maxie boy, you promised."
The old man said, then vanished in a plume of smoke, but his voice kept echoing in the church until Maximilien couldn't take it anymore and woke up screaming and looking around his room, as if hoping to find his grandfather.
"Are you okay Sir ? I heard you screaming. "
His maid asked. The young woman looked extremely worried about her master. He seemed to be having a lot of nightmares lately. The young master, however, gave a weak smile and assured his maid that he was alright.
The young woman didn't seem convinced, but she nodded and left the room.
Maximilien took a shower to clear his head and decided to call his grandfather afterward.
"Oh, Max, I was just about to call you."
The old man said when he answered his phone. His voice seemed a bit stronger and healthier.
"Ah, yes grandfather, how are you? Is your new caretaker treating you well?"
"Oh Max, you have no idea. She has changed my old diets, she gives me some herbal tea and even takes me out for walks. Can you believe Max? I feel like a young boy again! She even sits down to play chess with me."
The old man exclaimed happily. Maximilien was thrilled with the news.
"I'll come and visit you whenever I can, grandfather. I promise."
"Actually Max, do not get angry. First, remember that I am my own man and I can make my own decisions. And if I didn't tell you anything, it was because I didn't want to get you worried."
Max drew a sharp breath while rubbing the bridge of his nose. He could sense bad news on the way.
"Alright grandfather, what is it?"
"I'm not home right now. I went with Tori to her town. She thinks it would be a good idea for me to connect with nature a bit. And I agree with her."
Max couldn't believe what his grandfather had just said. How could he be so reckless? How could he entrust his life to a total stranger? What was he going to do, hug bears and kiss trees ?
"Hmmm, well tell me that at least you took a few staff with you. "
"Don't worry Maximilien, I did . I'm not that stupid. If it makes you feel better, we already got clearance from her agency, and officer Brutis calls sporadically to check if everything is alright. I'm covered my boy. "
The old man heard his grandson sigh and mumble a few words, but he finally gave in and said;
"Okay grandfather, be safe. When are you coming back?"
"I honestly don't know my boy, I love her company, and she doesn't treat me like a sick man. She reminds me of your grandmother. May God rest her soul. And besides, I think a change of scenery can help me a lot. "
"Ah, so that's what it is, she reminds you of grandma. Well, be careful grandfather. I'll keep in touch."
"Wait Max, before you go, how are you?"
"I'm alright grandfather."
"And how's the company?"
"Now I see why Tori took you away. Everything is fine grandfather, focus on getting better."
The old man laughed.
"Alright my boy, I hope you get me an heir soon boy, you promised."
Max felt a sharp sting. He didn't know what to do. On one hand, he didn't want to risk another heartbreak, and on the other hand, he didn't want to disappoint his grandfather.
"Yes grandfather, don't worry about it. You'll soon get an heir."
He said, and his grandfather smiled and ended the call. Maximilien face palmed himself, before angrily tossing his phone onto the bed.
"Why did you have to leave Flora? We would have been married with kids by now. Curse you!"
He yelled . His maid rushed again to his room, to check up on her master. Max seemed bothered by her presence, but she wasn't fazed. The sight of her master in nothing but a towel was dazzling. She bit her lip lightly. Feeling her tummy tingle. It was torture enough that her master was charming enough and didn't even spare her one glance, and now she had to endure seeing him almost naked.
"I'm fine Tina, thanks."
Max said. His maid didn't seem to hear him though, her eyes were fixed on his chest, and she had a weird look on her face as she bit down her lower lip. Just then, a cruel idea came to mind.
"Earth to Tina"
He said as he moved closer to her and grabbed her hand. With a genuine look of concern on his face, he raised her chin with his free hand and asked if she was okay, while staring into her eyes.
"Yes, yes... I'm fine Sir, I'm sorry."
Max nodded and let go of her before leaving for his closet. When he returned, she was gone. He smiled to himself and went down to have breakfast.
