Part 31

2002 Words

“We’re your friends, too,” Harper says after a few moments. Charlotte’s mouth drops open to explain when she realizes what Harper’s talking about. She hushes when Harper holds up at hand and points down at the girl lying on her chest. “And she most definitely is not just your roommate.”   The words leave Charlotte feeling odd for the rest of their trip and it isn’t until the night before their flight back to school that she says anything. Shela leads her down to the now-quiet beach and kisses her in the dark. They lie on a towel in sand with a blanket thrown over them and stare up at the stars. Shela tells Charlotte about constellations she could never see growing up in Busan. She tells her ridiculous stories and Charlotte can’t help the words that drive helplessly up her throat.
