Chapter Five:Fire in the Dark

940 Words
Selena barely slept. The memory of the burning sigil still haunted her, the whispered words echoing in her skull—“The bride must fall.” She had scrubbed her skin raw where the fire had branded her fingers, but the sting lingered, as though the mark had followed her under the flesh. By dawn, her nerves were stretched thin. Servants avoided her gaze, Kael hadn’t come to check on her, and the silence of the palace pressed in like suffocating smoke. At last, she left her chambers. If the walls meant to drive her mad, they would not win. The Fire King’s wing of the palace was forbidden to most, but Selena had learned the way. She stopped outside the carved obsidian doors of his private chambers, her heart hammering like a prisoner’s fists against its cage. She could walk away. Pretend she was still just the “contract bride.” Pretend she hadn’t felt his body shield hers, hadn’t seen his exhaustion in the training yard, hadn’t felt heat bloom in her chest whenever his eyes burned against her. But instead, she raised her hand. Knocked. The doors opened without a sound. Kael stood shirtless by the window, the early light gilding the hard planes of his chest. His scars caught the glow like silver fire, each one a story untold. He turned, surprise flickering across his features before his expression shuttered. “Selena,” he said slowly. “You shouldn’t be here.” Her lips curled, defiant. “You tell me that every time. And yet… you never send me away. For a long moment, silence stretched. Then Kael gestured to the table, where steam curled from a pot of black tea. “Sit,” he ordered softly. She obeyed, but her gaze never left him. He poured tea into two cups, his movements precise, restrained, as though control was the only thing holding him together. When he set the cup before her, their fingers brushed. Heat shot through her veins like lightning. She pulled her hand back too quickly, burning her tongue on the tea just to break the tension. Kael’s lips twitched, the ghost of a smirk. “Still reckless.” “Still distant,” she countered, lifting her chin. “Why do you hold me at arm’s length, Kael? You defended me before the council. You bleed for me. You burn for me. But the moment we are alone, you pretend none of it matters.” His jaw tightened. “Because it shouldn’t.” “And yet it does,” she whispered The space between them shrank like a collapsing world. Kael’s hand lifted—hesitant at first, then certain—as he cupped her face. His thumb traced her cheek, rough skin against softness, and her breath hitched. “You drive me mad,” he muttered, voice ragged. “I tell myself this is a contract, nothing more. But when you look at me like that…” His eyes darkened. “…I want to forget every vow I made to myself.” Selena’s heart thundered. She leaned into his touch, reckless. “Then forget.” His restraint snapped. Kael’s mouth crashed against hers, fierce and consuming. She tasted fire and hunger, the kiss bruising and desperate, as though he’d been starving for her. Her hands tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, deeper. The tea between them toppled, forgotten, as Kael lifted her effortlessly onto the table. His lips trailed fire along her jaw, down her throat, until she gasped his name like a prayer. “Kael…” Her voice trembled, half warning, half plea. “You should leave,” he growled against her skin, his hands gripping her waist with bruising intensity. “Before I do something we both regret.” Selena tilted his chin up, forcing him to meet her eyes. “What if I don’t want to leave?” For a heartbeat, silence hung heavy. Then he kissed her again, slower this time—deliberate, claiming. His tongue teased hers, a dance of fire and smoke, until she melted against him. Her nightrobe slipped from her shoulder, and his lips found the bare skin there. Selena’s breath caught, her body trembling under his touch. His teeth grazed lightly, drawing a gasp, then soothed the sting with his tongue. It was intoxicating. Dangerous. Wrong. And she never wanted it to stop. But it did. A crack echoed through the chamber, sharp as breaking glass. Both froze. Kael spun, fire blazing in his palms, his body shielding hers instinctively. The window was unbroken. The room untouched. But there—in the corner where shadow met flame—another sigil burned into the wall, darker and larger than the last. This time, the voice was louder. “The Flame King must fall with his bride.” Selena’s blood ran cold. Kael moved before she could blink, his arm sweeping her behind him as fire roared to life, scorching the sigil until it disintegrated into smoke. His chest heaved, fury vibrating off him like heat waves. When he turned back to her, his eyes weren’t just fire—they were war. “Whoever dares touch you,” he swore, voice low and deadly, “will burn.” Selena’s knees nearly gave out as his hands gripped her arms, steadying her. But in his eyes, something else flickered—something unspoken, dangerous, more intimate than any kiss. Fear. Not for himself. For her. And for the first time, Selena realized the truth: Kael Hales might have sworn this was only a contract, but in the depths of his fire, she was already more than that.
