The Alpha King

Chapter 3 The Alpha King The rain stopped sometime after sunset. But the heaviness inside my chest remained. I stood in front of the mirror fastening silver earrings with unsteady fingers while two omega girls adjusted the deep blue gown flowing around my legs. Tonight was the Moonfall Banquet. A smaller gathering before the official Winter Summit began tomorrow. Normally, these events never unsettled me. As Luna of the Ashford pack, I had spent years standing beside Kael through ceremonies, negotiations, celebrations, and political dinners. But tonight felt different. Tonight, I felt like an imposter preparing to wear another woman’s title. One of the omegas stepped back carefully. “You look beautiful, Luna.” The compliment sounded genuine. Which somehow made my throat tighten. Because beauty meant nothing when the man meant to see it no longer looked at you at all. A knock sounded at the door. Mira entered carrying a velvet cloak. Her eyes softened the moment she saw me. “Kael’s already downstairs.” Of course he was. “He didn’t come up?” The question escaped before I could stop it. Mira hesitated. That was answer enough. I swallowed the humiliation quickly. “Never mind.” She crossed the room and fastened the cloak around my shoulders herself. “He should be ashamed,” she muttered quietly. I gave a tired smile. “No. Ashamed people apologize.” Mira looked like she wanted to say more, but footsteps echoed down the hallway outside. Male footsteps. Heavy. Familiar. The bond inside my chest flickered weakly. Kael. The door opened without warning. And suddenly the room felt smaller. Kael stood in the doorway wearing a fitted black formal jacket embroidered with dark silver threading across the shoulders. His hair was still slightly damp from a shower, the scent of cedar and winter smoke wrapping around him instantly. My traitorous heart reacted anyway. Even now. Even after everything. His eyes landed on me. And stayed there. For one long second, the cold distance I’d grown used to cracked slightly. Heat darkened his gaze as it traveled slowly over the gown hugging my body. The silence stretched. Mira noticed immediately. Smart enough to leave before the tension suffocated the room. The door clicked shut behind her. Now it was just us. Alone. Like strangers sharing memories neither of us knew how to fix anymore. Kael stepped farther inside. “You look beautiful.” The words hit harder than they should have. Because I couldn’t remember the last time he’d said something like that to me. I forced myself not to react. “Thank you.” His jaw tightened slightly at my calm tone. “You’re angry.” A hollow laugh nearly escaped me. Angry? No. Anger required energy. I was exhausted. “I’m attending tonight beside you,” I said quietly. “That should be enough.” Something dangerous flickered behind his eyes. “Lyra—” “Is Selene attending too?” The question sliced through the room sharply. Kael’s expression immediately hardened. “She’s family.” “And what am I?” Silence. The bond pulsed painfully between us. He took another step closer. Close enough for warmth to radiate from his body. “Don’t do this tonight.” Again. Those same words. As though my pain was an inconvenience he could postpone until it suited him. I looked up at him slowly. “You stopped choosing me a long time ago, Kael.” The words landed harder than I intended. His face darkened instantly. “That’s not true.” “Isn’t it?” I watched guilt flash across his features before pride buried it again. That was the problem. Kael always felt things. He just never acted fast enough. A knock interrupted the tension. “Alpha?” One of the warriors outside. Kael exhaled sharply before stepping away from me. “We’re leaving.” Not we need to talk. Not you matter. Not I’m sorry. Just: We’re leaving. Something inside me dimmed further. — The Moonfall Banquet was held inside the Iron Crescent Hall near the central territory border. By the time we arrived, the massive stone building glowed with torchlight against the dark mountains. Luxury carriages lined the courtyard. Warriors guarded every entrance. Servants moved like shadows through the crowded halls. Powerful Alphas from across the north had gathered already. The scent of wolves filled the air. Dominance. Politics. Danger. Kael’s hand rested lightly against my lower back as we entered the hall together. To everyone watching, we probably looked united. Mated. Powerful. Untouchable. The lie almost made me sick. Conversations quieted slightly as we passed through the crowd. Respect still followed Kael wherever he went. Women watched him openly. Male Alphas measured him carefully. But tonight, whispers followed me too. I could feel them. Poor Luna. The widow replaced her. Did you hear about the east wing? He’s bringing the widow tomorrow. Every glance felt like another cut beneath my skin. Kael either didn’t notice… Or chose not to. Then suddenly, the entire hall shifted. The atmosphere changed so sharply it felt physical. Warriors stiffened. Conversations died. Even dominant Alphas subtly straightened. Fear. Real fear. My wolf instantly went alert beneath my skin. The massive entrance doors opened. And he walked in. Alpha King Draven Mordaine. The male looked less like a man and more like something ancient carved from violence itself. Tall. Broad. Dressed entirely in black. Dark tattoos disappeared beneath the collar of his coat and curled along one powerful hand while silver rings glinted against scarred fingers. But it was his eyes that froze the room. Cold. Predatory. Merciless. A king used to obedience. Two massive wolves followed behind him in human form — clearly his elite guards — but no one looked at them. Every eye remained fixed on Draven. Including mine. Something primal stirred uneasily inside me. Not attraction. Not yet. Instinct. Danger. Kael’s posture hardened beside me instantly. I felt the shift in dominance rolling off him. Enemy. The northern territories had feared conflict between Ashford and Black Hollow for years. Now both Alphas stood under the same roof. Draven’s gaze swept lazily across the room. Uninterested. Detached. Bored. Until his eyes landed on me. Everything stopped. The noise. The movement. My breathing. The Alpha king went completely still. And for the first time since entering the banquet hall… Emotion crossed his face. Not softness. Recognition. My wolf reacted violently. A sharp pulse tore through my chest so suddenly I staggered slightly. Kael caught my arm immediately. “Lyra?” But I barely heard him. Because Draven was still staring directly at me. Like he’d just found something unexpected after years of searching. The air between us thickened dangerously. Then his nostrils flared once. His entire expression darkened. Possessively. My pulse stumbled. No. No, no, no. Impossible. A mating bond only happened once. Didn’t it? Draven started walking toward us. The crowd parted instantly for him. Even powerful Alphas moved aside without argument. Kael stepped slightly in front of me automatically. Protective. Territorial. Too late. Draven stopped only a few feet away. Close enough for me to catch his scent. Smoke. Winter. Blood. Dark forests after rain. His gaze never left mine. Not once. The king’s voice, when he finally spoke, was low enough to make the room feel colder. “So,” he murmured slowly, “this is the female everyone keeps trying not to mention.” A chill crawled down my spine. Kael’s jaw clenched hard. “Watch yourself, Mordaine.” Draven ignored him completely. That somehow felt worse. His eyes moved slowly over me again. Not lustfully. Carefully. As though assessing damage no one else bothered noticing. Then finally, finally, he spoke directly to me. “What’s your name, little wolf?” My throat tightened unexpectedly. “Lyra.” The Alpha king repeated it softly. “Lyra.” The way he said my name sounded dangerous. Like tasting something forbidden. Kael stepped forward immediately. “She’s my mate.” At that, Draven finally looked at him. Silence stretched between the two Alphas like a blade pulled tight. Then something almost mocking flickered across Draven’s face. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I can smell that.” And somehow… The way he said it sounded like a threat.
